Wig or not Wig? Starting chemo next week....

I'm starting chemo next week and it was suggested that I sort out a wig for when my hair falls out ... I have done a bit of googling and it all seems a bit mind boggling to be honest.  I am rubbish at choosing clothes yet alone a wig!

Any suggestions lovely people?

Anyone else starting chemo next week?  I am absolutely terrified -  I think it is fear of the unknown.  I just want to start it so that I can at least feel that I have one treatment down.

  • Hi I decided to go without a wig and just embrace the bald! It was hard at first but with help from the lovely peeps on here it’s been fine. Bought a lot of wee hats that I’ve been wearing. One year after chemo hair is not good so my BC nurse has given be another prescription for a wig while I wait for a dermatologist appointment but so far I haven’t bothered...I just wear the hats!

Someone will be along I’m sure to tell you their experience of choosing and wearing a wig. Personally I’d love to know are they comfortable and are they hot? TIA! x

Oh and best of luck with chemo...you are stronger than you think!! x

  • Thanks Bramble!  I quite like the idea of groovy hats...  sorry that you are still struggling with your hair after a year - that must be really tough.  I'm with you - I want to know if they are hot too (I have images of menopausal hot flushes in a wig !!!!).

  • Hi Charlie Lou,

I’m going for my free wig fitting tomorrow. Don’t know if I’ll wear it but at least i’ll Have the option. I’m rubbish at styling my hair so might be quite good.

I had my first chemo (EC) last Thursday. I get bad travel sickness so was scared about nausea/vomiting. Pleased to say not even any nausea. I have been tired at times though. Have tried to get out for a half hour walk each day too.

  • Hi

I got a wig but found didn't really wear it a lot . I was like  and embraced being a baldy . Using hats when needed . Only wore the wig two or three times when I didn't want my head to be the centre of attention Joy

Try Browns of Tavistock before covid they had reps throughout the country who set up in hospitals for appointments .Now I think you can do phone and video fittings .

If I was you I would take pictures of your hair now so you can match colour and style . Although I went for new style (pixie) and gave stayed with it until lockdown hair arrived Joy

Unlike Bramble22 my hair arrived back and was getting a trim every 4  weeks before this shutdown .

    Best wishes for your chemo

One step at a time and ...Breathe !

  • I wear a Wig at all times. I cannot cope with a bald head as I look horrendous. My wig gives me security and keep me my head warm. It’s cold without any hair. Nobody has noticed, or not mentioned it. I went for the fitting with my current hair so they got a good match. yes, A good idea to take photos if the fitting is later. I also got hats and headscarves. I wear them in the house but if I go out, wig it is. I got a band to go under the wig to make is absolutely secure and now it doesn’t budge a millimetre. If my hair doesn’t come back very strong I may stay with the wig for ever. It’s salon ready every morning!!!

I bought a wig and wore it perhaps once or twice before reverting to a scarf and a sun hat whilst outside, but at home I went alfresco with my shiny white headRofl.  I was so much more comfortable going bare and when you’re feeling like poop from the chemo it’s best just to be as relaxed as possible.  My advice would be to go with whatever you’re most comfortable with.
If you’re like me you’ll try everything first before finally settling on an option.Rofl.  just remember the hair will come back and it might be curly for the first year.  Mine was.

  • Hi Charlie Lou

I finished chemo just over a year ago now. I wore a wig when I went out cause I was used to alot of hair before ! I got one from a proper wig shop but when lockdown started I ordered from amazon and they have all been lovely, give them a try .I have a long straight brown one that's so natural and very comfy xxx
