This week, the Awake and up all night discussion in the cancer chat forum reached a one-year milestone. For a whole year, people have found support from posting in the discussion thread and reading the ongoing conversations.

Sleep problems may be caused by how you’re feeling emotionally, or as part of the side effects of cancer treatment. If you find it hard to get a good sleep, you’re not alone. The Online Community is here to support you 24/7. The Awake and up all night discussion thread was created with the aim of being a dedicated space for people to access peer support when experiencing sleep issues.

“What a great idea for a thread.  I often had trouble falling asleep, especially when I had been diagnosed but was waiting results, my brain was in worry overdrive.”

“Great idea to have an Awake Thread in the Cancer Chat group.  That way everyone who has problems sleeping due to a cancer diagnosis or having trouble sleeping because of treatment has somewhere to come for support.”

“You've come to the right place though, as I sometimes feel down, especially in the small hours when I can't sleep and no-one else is around.”

“Have you tried leaving the radio on fairly quietly once you're in bed?  Many moons ago it worked for me as the more I tried to concentrate on a song, the sooner I'd nod off.”

"My go to trick now is to listen to ghost or horror stories on YouTube.  I've found Raven Reads a good one - yeah, they're American and can be a bit of a cheese fest - but some stories are creepy and Raven has a very soothing voice."

“I love old movies from the 50's and 60's and have them on in the background. I don't really watch them as such, just having them on in the background seems to help! My other half doesn't mind either, so long as I keep the volume down....Also, sounds of nature playing in the background is another thing. I love the sound of the sea and you can buy loads of nature sounds on CD or other formats...it is soothing.”

“I check the forum when I’m awake but if nothing much is happening, II go to my free Jigsaw Appp and spend quite a lot of time doing jigsaws! It is a good way to pass the time in the middle of the night if you are not sleeping.”
