Hi I just been diagnosed with breast cancer. I have to have chemotherapy first to reduce the size of the tumor. I’m really worried about it has anybody got any advice? Thank you
Hi Imbolc, sorry you are having to join us here but offering you warm hugs. Please click on my name to see my background story. Breast cancer is very treatable now so please be reassured. Everybody reacts differently to chemo so please just take one step at a time and I found it handy to keep a diary of my side effects as easier to remember and report back to your consultant. I have had many changes to my chemo in reaction to my body’s reactions so please bear in mind that although one type is recommended, it may change along with estimated timescales.
I know your head will be very busy with lots of thoughts but have you considered if a cold cap would be available to you? You do not loose hair with all treatments so I would take advice from your Breast Care Nurse or consultant. Is it something you would consider? I purchased a wig in between lockdowns so I could try them at the hairdressers. It is hard during lockdown but there are many you can buy online or silk / bamboo head coverings etc. I have mentioned this now (I know early and last thing on your mind) as easier when you feel more up to it and the cold cap is something that you need to use from the start of it is the right option for you. It is not for everyone.
Please ask me any questions you want about treatment. I had my tumour removed first and so I can’t comment personally on the order of your treatment but there are plenty of lovely friendly ladies on here to help you too.
Take your time to digest all the new information and keep a written record as you have so much and will have so much information to absorb and consider.
Also, I know the last thing on your mind too but if you are working and have critical illness cover, I would advise that you look into this as they usually have a time limit on how long you can claim for. I think mine was 28 days from diagnosis so please contact them if you have a policy to avoid you missing out.
Sending you positive vibes.
Bekky
