Hi everyone, I’m just wondering if the ladies who have gone through Chemo could give any advice ... I had my first Chemo on 15th January, yesterday I had stray hairs on my face, is this the start of loosing my hair ?, I didn’t cold cap as wasn’t offered it, don’t think I could have coped with it really, but as wasn’t offered it, just thought the unit couldn’t be doing it due to COVID.
At what point did you cut your hair ?
At what point did you shave your hair ?, did you go for a grade 4 or 5, or just shave it all off ?
For the lock down ladies, as no hair dressers, did you cut it your self or shave it yourself, or did someone you live with do it for you ?
thank you xx
Hi Crawleryes Loose hair could be the start of shedding hair and it can start really quickly I was on EC and you can lose hair within a week with that . I was lucky it lasted about 8 weeks before starting to shed
It was before covid so hairdresser cut my mid bob to pixie length before I started I then treat it very gently one shampoo only when Necessary. Pat with towel then finger dry no heat or product . I used nioxin shampoo which is a specialist for strengthing follicles. Still using it now 18 month later but also use the conditioner now on new hair . Once bottle finished will use normal .
as hair shed more and more we just kept it tidy and cut it short . I did not shave til end because didn't want fuzz or nick scalp . Wearing hat when outside anyway so no problem . Just before last chemo wispy hair was annoying so had no 2 shave so new hair had scalp shape to grow into .
As well as bamboo beanies for daytime ( used to add colourful headbands ) A couple sleep caps are a good idea it saves rubbing more hair off and waking up with a mouthful One thing nobody warned me about was how painful it can be when hair is about to shed the slightest breeze lifting my hair was so sore !!
This all worked for me but as you know we all different and with covid it's harder .So go with what you feel comfortable with I would rather of not lost hair but found that when it happened I was fine with it . If it bothered other people that there was a bald head in the cafe/pub that was their problem not mine .
Shaved head in November finished chemo in December went into March lockdown with a little fuzz came out in July needing haircut . Came back curly very thick needs cut every 4weeks so messy lockdown hair now .
Thank you Northerner, wish the hair dressers were able to work, I’d have my hair cut shorter, it’s just below collar length at the moment, don’t really want my husband to try and cut it, probebly look like Mr Bean, and don’t want to feel any worse than I do.
I will look for the nioxin shampoo, and also give the wig people a ring tomorrow, their not at the hospital at the moment, they just gave me the phone no to ring them, wonder if they can make me look like Marilyn Monroe lol.
Thank you again Northener x
Out of darkness cometh light
Shame no visit to wig team it was a laugh a minute with the girl I had tried all sorts on
This is the one that matched 21 yr old me
This is the wig I chose perfect match for 70yr old me with pixie cut . nobody could tell the difference
This was two days after first chemo my eyes look bad . They were affected all the way thru had to use dry eye drops .
Shame about hairdresser and lockdown have a look on line for any tutorials or ask your hairdresser the best way to cut it . Hopefully they'll be back in March . At least it's winter so hats don't look out of place I wore bamboo beanie with woolly hat over the top. I also managed to get some beanies that looked like normal walking hats in a stretch jersey they were on Amazon .Still wear those now .
Wooo, love the long wig, always loved long thick hair, the short one dose look very natural, I have a couple of hats, and a short scarf, I like the scarves with the long peice at side, so will order one of those, and look at the beanies ... thank you again Northener x

Hi Margaret, me again!! Your hair looks fab. I’m one year after chemo and my hair is so sparse still. I’m being sent to a dermatologist to see if they can do anything for me, I’m guessing not. I have a prescription for a wig so my question is ...is it comfortable to wear, and are they very noticeable? x
Hi Bramble22
aww! Shame your hair on strike hope they get it sorted . My wig came from Browns of Tavistock they have reps all over . She came to hospital but that was before covid . They are on line . I chose a pixie cut as that was how I’d had hair cut for chemo . To be honest didn’t wear it that often . It was very comfortable but you do need to use a wig net / liner . It took a few goes for me to find out how to put liner on so it was comfortable . The trick for the wig was the headband should be four fingers width from brow . Absolutely nobody could tell it was a wig . Biggest laugh is because people haven’t seen me due to shielding they are very unsure if I’m still wearing wig
Hi Crawler,
I started to lose hair (noticeably) 13 days after my 1st chemo (EC). 5 days later it (for unknown reasons) ended up in dreadlocks when I washed it. So, I shaved (with a guard) the back and sides and left some on top (it's kind of a transition and my husband had to nested it up as I'd hacked at it with tears streaming) but I've now developed bald patches so think the top will go this weekend. It is a lot more comfortable and less painful now tho.
I knew I was going to lose my hair, so have hats, scarves and 2 wigs (bought online due to covid).
After the initial shock. Its not as bad as I thought it would be
Xxx
Thanks for that Margaret, I’ll maybe see about a wig once the Covid restrictions are lifted a bit!!
Hair on strike, I’m going to use that!! x
