i had breast cancer two years ago, had the lump removed followed by Radiotherapy. I am now taking  Letrozole for the following five years. Does anyone know if you are more vulnerable if you are on Letrozole and do you have to isolate. I did not receive a letter the last time in lock down to say I had to isolate, but one of my friends has been advised  to isolate and she is on Letrozole. Thanking everyone now for your comments

  • Hi , if you’re new here then a very warm welcome to the forum, don’t remember seeing your name before. Sorry though if it’s just my very bad memory!
Good question, I’ve wondered the same ever since they started saying that it was thought that pre menopausal women seemed less likely to get severe Covid, and this was attributed to higher oestrogen than after the menopause. However, I’m very similar to you, diagnosed Oct 2018, surgery, then radiotherapy January 2019, and at least 5 years of Anastrozole, cousin of letrozole. I’ve not been told to isolate at any time during the pandemic so assume that I’m not regarded as at any greater risk.
Interested in others’ responses, there are lots of us here on oestrogen inhibitors but I’m not aware of any who’ve been told to isolate unless they have other underlying conditions.
Is your friend on any other medication or do they have any other conditions which might be why they have been told to isolate?

Wishing you well and sending love and hugs your way, HFxx

  • Hi and I was told a while ago by a BCN that Letrozole would not make me more susceptible to covid. I will attempt to attach a link to a really useful page on the Breast Cancer Now website re. covid. It talks you through the effect of various breast cancer treatments on the immune system and looks at whether they will make you any more vulnerable to the virus.  I am on the 'extremely vulnerable' list but I understand that is due to the lasting effects of chemo rather than the Letrozole. Sending hugs and I hope this helps a bit. xx

  • Thanks , I checked and found it on the breast cancer now site. I’ve tried to copy the link too, let’s see if it works!

We’ll see..... And actually an anecdotal story is also reassuring: the lovely  (hope you don’t mind me tagging you) has worked with elderly residents of a care home, many of whom had Covid, throughout the pandemic and I’m sure she is on letrozole. Somehow she has stayed well so definitely can’t have been more susceptible. I know that’s not proof but is reassuring! HFxx

  • Nope my link doesn’t work either! Well it’s quite easy to find for anyone else who’s interested, just go on the website and search for Covid and letrozole

Thanks for the reply, spoke to my friend and they do have an underlying condition which has made her more vulnerable.  Will keep positive and hope you do the same. Stay safe.
