Hi all, I am just wondering if anybody else has suffered long term mental health issues following mastectomy (no reconstruction)? My op was in Jan 2017 and unfortunately I received no counselling at the time. I have very low self esteem now.
Hi,
so very sorry you are struggling, and yes; your body image has been changed and damaged accordingly. If you’re still in touch with your team I would urge you to contact them and seek help for your grief, as grief and bereavement it surely is. I was told by my Macmillan-counselling-trained nurse that she’s happy to see patients even 10 years down the line if they suddenly feel they need it.
it does tend to take time to arrange and will now no doubt be by phone or maybe video link, so I would advise you to ask sooner rather than later. In the meantime don’t forget the helpline here, 0808 808 0000, as the staff are lovely. And of course, your fellows in the community totally get it, too!
sending you a big empathetic hug xxx
