Having got through chemo, surgery and rads I now appear to be under assault from anastrozole. The chemo (docetaxel) damaged my bladder lining and just as that was recovering I got hit with the anastrozole. I am 71, had a hysterectomy in 2006 and was taking one 1mg oestrogen only tablet every three days. The main part of my two tumours was Her2+ but one of them also had an oestrogen receptor. I cannot think that I am going to be producing much oestrogen by myself now, but the removal of all of it has left me with bladder pain, vaginal atrophy, joint pain and general exhaustion and, all in all, feeling very low. This is after just one month of anastrozole. Does this get better? Does the body learn to cope with this insult? I read that a lot of women simply stop taking this stuff and I’m not surprised! Any personal experiences would be helpful.
Hi Carmol
I have been taking Letrozole for 4 years 6 months and I have joint pain, which I am used too (hot flushes have eased off) also vaginal atrophy, urinary tract infections and residual urethral discomfort. The last appointment i had a surgeon said I could stop the Letrozole at 5 years if I wished. So I am going to take a month off now and see if it makes any improvement to my quality of life.
The cancer I had was grade 1 stage 1 and was 100% oestrogen positive. I think I have done well to manage for as long as I have on the tablets (actually I cut them in half but it still wipes out your oestrogen). It is a difficult choice to make but obviously depends how much you are suffering. Personally I am having a month off, but any consequences will be my own fault. I suppose many women will have chucked them in the bin long ago.
Let me know what you decide, keep up the fluids for bladder health and keep taking regular analgesia, wishing you all the best xxx
Thank you Snowys mum. You have done incredibly well to persevere for nearly five years. I will talk to my oncologist in the new year and take your advice re. analgesia xxx
