hiya I was advised to have a flu jab but can’t remember when the best time to have it was recommended

I have my 2nd chemo on the 3 January is it before or after

hope someone can help thanks xx

  • Hi

I would advise you to give your team a ring to check what they say, but in my chemo unit people are advised to get their flu jab in the third week of the cycle (so just before a treatment) when their neutrophil level has come back up.  I had my flu jab on Day 18 of my treatment cycle and this was approved in advance by my oncologist.  The jab did make my temperature rise a little above my usual for a few days and this was noted when I went for the next treatment, but it was still only 37.0 and so OK (my usual temp readings are 36.4 - 36.6).  Do check with your team, though, as they will have all your notes and know if there are any other factors which might affect the timing in your case.

  • Hi @Julus I was advised by Onco that the few days before chemo was best as your immune system was at strongest .still haven't had it as I started to feel rough so I'm gonna wait til new year .

ring your unit if you not sure

Hi I was advised the day before next chemo or on chemo day. I got home from my chemo and rang the doctors to make an advance appt and they told me to go in that day, so I got it there and then. Takes about 2 weeks to give you cover so the sooner the better. Like the others say check with your team xxx

I was told I had to have it after pre assessment (so bloods checked) but before chemo.  Risk was low but still wanted at best time.

Kids also couldn't have nasal flu shot as its a live vaccine so had to have flu jab due to risk to me (or I had to move out for A fortnight!!)
