Hi, new to this forum although been on kidney cancer forum for a while, could anyone give me some advice about re-applying for my driving license please, my original tumour was in kidney about five years ago and have since had mets to adrenal gland, a couple of skin legions and last December to brain for which I had gamma knife treatment, I informed DVLA and had to surrender my license for two years, I understand I might be able to re-apply after twelve months if no relapses, recent scans shows all clear and I have had no fits or seizures at all, I am currently on immunotherapy which I am coping very well with.

So my question is can I re-apply for my driving licence and how soon could I apply and does been on immunotherapy have any impact on my application to DVLA

Thank you, Steve

  • Hi Steve

I don't have any personal experience of having to reapply for my driving licence to draw on, but I noticed that your post hasn't had any response yet.

If you click here it will take you to the DVLA's page on reapplying for a driving licence following a medical condition.

Under 'how to reapply' it says "DVLA will send you a letter when your licence is taken away ...... The letter will tell you if there’s a period of time you need to wait before getting a new licence. You can then reapply 8 weeks before the end of this period."

In the next section it says "Check with your doctor that you can meet the medical standards for driving before reapplying for your licence".

Let us know how you get on.

  • Thanks for the reply Latchbrook, I was wondering if I could apply for my licence early, I was informed by DVLA I would have to wait two years before applying but after speaking to friends and medical staff they seem to think I should be able to apply after 12 months providing no relapses and doctors permission and I was hoping someone on here might have had experience with DVLA, I will try and ring them next week and feedback any updates

  • Hi

I've just typed 'driving licence' into the search bar in the group and there are a few previous posts. You could have a look through those and see if any help with your questions. If not, speaking to the DVLA seems like a good idea and it would be great if you can report back so that others in future might find the help they need through your posts.

I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you Fingers crossed

  • Hi Steve

I can't help with anything regarding whether immunotherapy is relevant to re-applying for your licence but I do have experience with DVLA.

Unfortunately they are not easy to deal with. I would not ring them - they are working from home and I don't know if that means calls are not being recorded. There is therefore no comeback on anything that is said but later disputed. Try and get whatever you can get agreed in writing. I find that they work very much ' the rules say' and that is for your safety etc. If they have previously told you that it is 2 years my guess is that is what they will stick too. However, apart from your time I don't suppose you have anything to lose by trying, assuming that your consultant is going to confirm you are fit to drive.

At the best of times, which these aren't, they work at their own pace and my experience is they take months to review each piece of information, ask for more, take months to review and take months again to contact you for more. It took so long to get my licence back after my first surgery that the licence was waiting for me on the door mat when we came home from my second craniotomy two and a half years later, (ie - 18 months after applying) which was another automatic suspension.

Sorry to sound so negative. Don't hold your breathe for your licence back quickly, but equally, the sooner you put in you're application the sooner you'll know whether they are willing to accept the consultants opinion. You're no worse off than the time its taken to fill in the application.

    Good luck
