My sister has secondary breast cancer in her lung and bones, she’s told me she has been given 2 years (since diagnosis in October 2018) on her current drugs and then nothing after that . I offered support and felt I was rebuffed so stepped back now to my more usual relationship with her. She has supportive friends, she is buys as she ever was (despite being very tired from the drugs). I on the other hand struggle with a chronic illness so feel pretty useless to her practically - and she’s doesn’t seem to want my emotional support - and I am ashamed at how devastated, withdrawn from my own life and depressed I have become in the light of how she is coping so well and getting every drop out of life she possibly can - supporting worthy causes, as much as she ever did, being a fantastic friend to her friends etc ... I am at a loss. I feel I have already lost her. And I feel shame for how I am feeling.
I think what you are feeling is completely normal. I also think how your sister is living her life is also completely normal. During my mother's terminal cancer, I did quite a bit of mourning during the two and a half years she lived while my mother spent much of that same time living life to the fullest and doing her normal things. Only when the symptoms began to progress in the end did she really seem to want emotional or physical support.
My advise is to just continue to be there for when that time comes. Be supportive of your sister without always offering support verbally which I think is a reminder of how short their life may be. Eventually she may come to need your emotional support. It really is true that cancer is a family disease because it affects everyone in the family in different ways. Hang in there.
Best wishes
