My wonderful mother in law was told last week that she has a tumour on her kidney.  She has had ct scans, ultrasounds and, because she has been breathless, a chest xray. We found out yesterday that there are lesions showing on her lung too and there may also be cancer in her bowel.  In just one week she has gone from being someone who had a real positive outlook to someone wanting to "put her affairs in order". She wont leave her home unless it's for an appointment and seems to have given up.  She has always been there for us and helped us raise our children..without her I dont think we could have managed. We've told our youngest that she is unwell but just dont know how to tell them how seriously ill she is?

  • Hi and a warm welcome to Carers. I'm sorry to hear about your mum. As for telling the children, that's a difficult one. Some say, be honest, others say, spare them until you have to tell them. This link will take you to a page with a variety of materials with guidance on telling children.

    Thinking of you,

Thanks so much LoobyLou49.  I've just read through some of the materials and they have really helped.  My mum in law has an appointment on Monday with a urologist so we should get a better idea of what we are facing then.  I think we will talk to our children after that and see where we go from there....together
