  • Dear Husband, I will be there for you, every step of the way, right by your side.
    Our final journey has begun.

    The cancer has overwhelmed us.

Weeks maybe months if we are fortunate.

    No treatment.

    We are utterly devastated.

My heart is already breaking and we have yet to tell the family. I want him to live forever.

May 2014, secondary mets - 2 years on
Two years on, I hear us say "Here we go again",
Tests and scans completed it really is a drain.
Now in his liver we were told two mets, or possibly three
"A liver resection to remove the parts then you'll be cancer free."
35 staples, a few more holes his tummy is a sight
A treasure map, one good man and a nasty pirate to fight.
The kids now talk of Thomas Tank riding on the track.
"Choo choo" they say, repeatidly whilst Daddy lies on his back.

May 2012, the journey begins with Stu and Colin
My Daddy has a stoma, I think we'll call him Stu
And a little bag called Colin who collects up all his poo.

My Daddy started bleeding when he went to use the loo,
So he went to see the Doctor who decided what to do.

"An operation is best I think to sort this tumour out
Mr Harmston is the best there is of that I have no doubt”.

The operation went very well where Stu and Colin arrived,
My Daddy stayed in hospital to rest his weary eyes.

As days went by the pain grew less and...

  • Dear Husband, I will be there for you, every step of the way, right by your side.
    Utterly numb

The news isn't good at all. It seems that there is a tumour on hubby's brain now, confirmed by the mri scan from last week.

I have no feelings to express, no words, no nothing - just tears and more tears. I'm utterly numb and the very person whom I would turn to for comfort and love is still reeling from the news too. My gentle giant, my good and wonderful husband. The love of my life.

We are good people, all our lives together doing the right thing by our family. Leading a simple life...

  • After he has gone.......
Slammed by the grief monster today

Doug would have been 54 today, we always went away for the weekend for our birthdays and I cannot help but wonder where we would have travelled this time.  Two years ago on his 52nd we had a wonderful weekend in Brighton of course last year he was not here and little can I remember anyway.

Today I was expecting to spend time remembering in my own way this morning and then to potter on into today as I usually do on days I don't work.  What I was not expecting was the overwhelming feeling of being...

  • A Walk down memory lane
    Junior Favourites

I feel its time for another walk but am too unwell at the moment for the real thing.  So I thought one or two of you may enjoy a Saturday morning walk in the early fifties down memory lane.

So switch the Radio on...that's the one that does not have a screen..wait for it to warm up and then retune it from Radio Luxemburg (That's Keynsham K E Y N S H A M Bristol, Horace Bachelor) to the BBC Light Program.

The first tune that comes to my mind is probably a Freudian slip.  Tick tock tick tock...

  • Dyad's second time around
    Breathing

At the weekend I went to the monthly meditation session that I've mentioned before. It is held at the home of someone (D) who is a follower of Thich Nhat Hanh (known as Thay, pronounced 'tie'). I don't know whether D is a Buddhist or not. I don't know whether I am a Buddhist because I listen and respond to what I hear at these meetings, or whether I'm just a non-believer who finds the Buddhist way of looking at the world interesting and approachable, and above all kind and loving. I'm getting...

  • Problem keeping cheerful with recurrent bladder cancer
As a relatively young woman with bladder cancer who do I talk to?
I feel completely low with my bladder cancer at the moment. Was diagnosed with a low grade and non-invasive tumour 4 years ago at age of 49. I was shocked as a non smoker and otherwise healthy. The cancer recurred twice very quickly and I received mytomycin which held it at bay for 3 years. At a recent cystoscopy I was told that it had returned - a real blow but I had very speedy TURBT and my consultant has told me that the cells brushed away easily but there is abnormality over my right ureter...

  • Salvage radiotherapy - another journey
Radiotherapy underway, day 29/33 to day 33/33

29/33 Tuesday 06 May 2014: Weight 74.9 kilos. I was feeling very upbeat today as it is the last week of my R/T. Not quite so upbeat last Friday evening, when I passed wind, explosively, or so I thought. Turned out I’d soiled my pants. I had been warned that stomach gas would build up but hadn’t expected quite such an effect. This morning, was about to clean my teeth, when I felt a bit of gas build up. Sat on the toilet as a precaution and the same thing happened, a forceful fart and some faecal matter...
