Hello all,
just looking for advice and reassurance. I have been having issues with irregular/heavy bleeding for the past 6 months, along with a few other worrying symptoms. I have spoken to a consultant today and he has explained that it may be cancer or hormones. He is putting on the waiting list for a hysteroscopy, to be done under local anaesthetic. My concern is waiting time. He said it’s a piece of string because of Covid, but explained that they usually worry if the waiting list is 200.... but it’s currently at 1000. I’m really concerned that if is is something sinister there is a risk of it growing or spreading and being more difficult to treat. Is anyone able to tell how long they waited.? Also has anyone paid private?
Thank you in advance x
I had mine done last year, at a Nuffield Hospital, for the same reasons. In total, with consultant fee, pre-op, lab and hospital fees, it came to around £1600. If you contact your nearest private hospital, they'll provide an itemised quote. I had the procedure within a week of construction
Hi Loolah 79,
I am sorry that you find yourself here but welcome.
It must be worrying being told your symptoms could be cancer and that you would be put on a waiting list of 1000.
How did you get to see the consultant? Did your GP refer you under the 2 week rule? If the consultant thinks you could have cancer then investigations have to be undertaken in a reasonable time. You could contact the hospital PALS (patient advise and liaison service) team who are usually really helpful in getting answers.
I was getting symptoms in March of this year, I was referred to the NHS under the 2 week rule but due to COVID 19 decided to go privately. I was covered by insurance. Most private hospitals will have a set price for procedures. I had an ultrasound scan, MRI and rather than hysteroscopy had biopsies taken by pipelle, no scope put into the womb just blind biopsies taken. Everything was done very quickly. Saw the consultant on Thursday, scan Friday morning, MRI Friday afternoon and biopsies Saturday morning. In the end it was 3 weeks from first symptoms to surgery.
Please let us know how you get on.
Best wishes
Honey
Thank you Honey, it sounds like you had a very efficient service!
I was referred to the gynaecologist by GP. She didn’t mention the 2 week rule. I was initially told the earliest would be end of sept, but managed to get a cancellation but would be a telephone consultation. My appointment is at a private hospital but under NHS, presumably to help with the backlog.
The consultant was lovely, he explained that the symptoms I have, at my age (40) could really be hormone imbalance or cancer. He explained I’ll go on the waiting list for hysteroscopy and what that would entail. He also said he would insert a merina coil at the same time. I don’t know what to think, but having read a few stories on here, the coil seems to be an initial treatment to slow things down?
symptom wise I’ve had very long, heavy periods that can either be 2 weeks late or just 5 days after the last, that started about 5 months ago, pains, very bloated, and discomfort during sex and nausea, almost like morning sickness with breast soreness for about 2 weeks before a period. I did have a scan last year that revealed a possible fibroid.
