Hi

I've never been a big drinker but I do like the Bailey's especially during Xmas time. Some research said alcohol increases cancer recurrence. What's your view on going teetotal?

Thanks.

  • Hi Puffin, just to say I’m already teetotal - stopped drinking alcohol in 1988 when pregnant with my first child, and never went back to it. So I never had that decision to make post cancer. All the best with your decision.

  • Hi Puffin

I do not tend to drink now, only very occasionally and it wasn't so much a conscious decision but rather I went off certain foods and drinks after my chemo. I also found I had to watch what I ate and drunk after my radiotherapy.

Its not that I have decided to be teetotal, more that I can take it or leave it.

I think after any serious illness that it is natural to look at lifestyle factors and to see what we can do to reduce recurrences or developing new cancers. I know that I have become more aware of trying to be healthier and what I can do proactively. I also made sure that I knew what signs to look out for that may mean a recurrence and who I needed to contact if I was worried.

I also think balance is important and if I want to occasionally enjoy a drink or have a treat such as cake or chocolate- then I will. I didn't go through all the treatments to not enjoy life again. My CNS also agreed with me. But on the whole I try to be healthier than I was before diagnosis. I do try to walk regularly as it is an accessible exercise and I find it helps with the neuropathy from the chemo. I also find it helps mentally to get out and about.
