Radiotherapy

After 5 of 6 cycles of chemotherapy my oncologist decided that was enough. My last chemotherapy was 24th March. I had a telephone consultation on 9th April, when I was told that I wouldn’t need cycle 6. The oncologist was aiming for 4 cycles so the 5th was a bonus. I have another telephone consultation on 7th May when I should get some idea of when the radiotherapy will happen. I’m due for 5 weeks radiotherapy plus brachytherapy.

Due to abuse I suffered as a teenager I can not tolerate internal examinations. I had 3 hysteroscopy under general anaesthetic because of that. So now I’m getting in quite a state about the brachytherapy as I know it’s really going to trigger so many memories. My nurse has been retrained for Covid nursing so I cannot speak to her. She knows my background and would have been able to talk to the radiotherapy nurses with me. But now, with everything going on, I’m going to have to do this all alone, I’ve always had my sister in law with me for all appointments and surgeries.

At the moment I don’t even know if the radiotherapy is going ahead or if it will be delayed as going into the hospital every day with the virus around probably puts me in more danger than the risk of the cancer returning. I’m told there is no active cancer and my treatment was a “in case” treatment due to finding cells in the Fallopian tube which after extensive investigations could not be identified.

  • Hello

I hope u get an answer on Thurs as to whether you'll b having radiotherapy or not and if so, when

Do have a list of questions by the phone  and get someone to write the answers down.

    I suspect t'll be delayed.

    Let us know won't you?

Fear of the unknown is the worst thing. Once we know what we're facing, we find the strength to deal with it.
  • Hi  I’m sorry you have all this anxiety and worry about the brachytherapy. I can understand that it’s not an easy prospect for you. I think  is right - try to arrange to have someone with you when they call. If not, maybe ask if you can record the conversation on your phone so that you can listen back to it later. Check whether you can phone or email the person you speak to on the 7th with any questions you may have afterwards. I hope the consultation goes well and I hope that when you get to have the treatment you’ll be met with great understanding and kindness. Take care and please let us know how you get on x

On Nina60, my heart goes out to you. I cannot add to the excellent advice given by Buttercup01 and Fairycake but I do hope that you will not have to do this alone. You are in my thoughts and prayers as always. God bless love lambxx

  • Hi Nina

I really do feel for you.  I was very upset when I was told I would need radiotherapy and brachytherapy - almost two years ago now.  With your history suffering abuse this must be a huge worry for you.  Although it won't help much I am going to tell you how kind and sensitive all the radiotherapy staff were and even more so the brachytherapy staff - who were so good and professional about preserving my dignity and making the whole process much easier than I expected.

If you do need to have radiotherapy, it would be worth explaining your concerns at the outset, ie when you have your telephone consultation on 7th May.  Clinicians are well aware of how childhood experiences can affect people's ability to cope with medical procedures and it is part of the treatment to support you with this.  It's unfortunate that your nurse has been relocated, if your sister in law is unable to accompany you, perhaps there is someone else or maybe a nurse can be assigned to be with you.  You do have a right to expect this support, the anxieties which your childhood has created are not trivial, neither are they your fault.

Please do be open and honest about your worries and ask for whatever help and support you need,  You have done well with the chemo - radiotherapy and brachytherapy is much easier and it will stand you in good stead for the future.

    Best wishes for Thursday xxxx

  • Thank you for all your replies. I've just spoken with the oncologist. I have 5 weeks of radiotherapy, to start in June. She mentioned brachytherapy but did say it was not essential. I read what I'd written and once I got to the part of needing anaesthetic for the hysteroscopy she immediately said not to do the brachytherapy.

Another plus is that my nurse is back.
