I had a total hysterectomy including lymph nodes in November 2019 (stage 1a grade 3 ) for cancer in a uterine polyp. I made a good recovery and no further traces were found but I was recommended to have vaginal vault brachytherapy as a follow up because of it being grade 3 cancer. I had this in mid January 2020 , as 4 sessions over a two week period. I found I went home afterwards and basically crashed out for several hours.
Even now over 6 weeks later I still find myself getting suddenly very tired after any undue effort even mild and lack energy. Yet all the literature I have says that vaginal brachytherapy on its own should not cause extreme fatigue? Also I am mildly constipated and again the literature says side effects include diarrhoea. Anyone else on similar treatment plan had similar sure effects to me?
Hi nightingale 19,
Don't worry, I was exactly the same as you and felt completely exhausted after 4 sessions of brachytherapy. My oncologist said this was totally normal and that it would take 3-6 months to fully recover. I was lucky, as my energy was back after about 4 months, I think it's combined with nervous exhaustion. I think we are so swept up in tests, waiting for results, shock of diagnosis and major surgery etc that our brains don't really assimilate the gravity of the situation. It's only after treatment finishes that it hits us. Do phone your CNS if you are worried and try buying a packet of oat bran to deal with the constipation. Two table spoons a day on your cereal works wonders! Take carexx
Hi Nightingale,
I think you are expecting too much of yourself. I know brachytherapy is not as harsh as external radiotherapy, but no-one can say its 'natural'. Its got to destroy cells that your body is trying to repair. That takes energy. Apart from the psychological side of things.
My bowels are definitely different even after just a hysterectomy. I know I need to go, but it feels as if there is a 'ledge' to get over.I have to sit quietly and then things work!!! Its the new me!!! No rushing allowed!!!
I'd say give it more time. All the best xxxxx
I’m a year on from my brachytherapy and I still don’t feel anywhere near recovered. Some days I just feel wiped out. Using the dialator is getting more uncomfortable. Bowel habits are definitely more urgent. I so expected to feel better by now...
Hi there
hope you are feeling okay. I had RT and brachytherapy in 2018. I read your thread about you having some spotting using dilator. I get very stressed about using mine because of this even though had internal inJan and all okay! Lots of late effects on bowel too x
Had my 4 monthly check last week, have to have another CT scan next week due to ongoing abdominal pain..
Prayers it will all be okay and the CT is just a precaution xx
