Hi All and Happy Christmas,

Just popped in here to ask if anyone else has had late gut side effects of the radiotherapy,  and if there are any tips for managing them.

I finished my radiotherapy in mid July and since the beginning of December started to get some gastric discomfort,  nothing I couldn't ignore.

Then since last week I have been having constipation,  which has got to the stage where I can't keep food down ( finally, some help losing weight, I managed to put on weight during chemo!). I assume thats cos what's in my gut already wont get out of the way, that's how it feels.Been to hospital had X Ray's and a new contrast CT, and no blockage or visible reason for it, but confirmed plenty of faecal matter in there.

My oncologist says he expects it's radiotherapy side effects.

Also, I am  having burning pain across my abdomen under my ribs, in fact it started with tenderness there before spreading south.

I have had a couple of enemas, and couple of Laxidos a day, got some limited help from those. About to try a blitz of Laxido, ( GP said try doing 8 Laxido in 1 day, as its confirmed there is no blockage, but it may lead to quite a lot of cramping).I am not looking forward to the cramping.

Any ideas to tackle this from anyone who has had anything similar?

Thanks

  • Hi I would certainly say that I have what is probably now damage from radiotherapy rather than late side effects as it's just over 2 years since I completed it, but my problems are the opposite to constipation so can't really offer any advice although I hope you can get some relief and help with managing it soon as it sounds very uncomfortable.  I already had IBS before treatment and so it is a fair bit worse these days than it used to be.  I am agoraphobic so only leave the house on average once every week or two (with someone as I can't go on my own) but I have to take an Imodium before I go anywhere and if I wasn't agoraphobic I would be taking them a heck of a lot more and sometimes I think it is probably a good thing in a weird way that I am stuck indoors as I am not far from the toilet!  It sometimes feels like having a tummy bug every few days and does get me down but not a great deal I can do about it.

    Hugs, Lesley xx

  • Hello Ladies, you could both have late side effects as the term covers effects which occur at any stage from a few months after treatment to many years later. Often these result from damage caused by the radiotherapy. There is also something called pelvic radiation disease - I’m not a medic and I’m not saying this is what you have but you might find some helpful info and tips here https://www.prda.org.uk/

Wishing you both a happy Christmas x

    Thanks Lesley,

So far I have tried to eat a couple of thin slivers of melon and 2 forks of smoked salmon at Christmas lunch. No joy, it came up 10 minutes later. I made no further attempt at the meal but was copiously sick later that evening.  That actually made me more comfortable that night and today. Chanced a slice of toast today, which has stayed down so far. So I think my food tally is 4 slices of toast since last Friday 22nd. Toast seems to be tolerable, but I'm not pushing my luck.

I think as you say, it looks like adapting lifestyle to a new digestive reality may be on the cards. Going to see my GP on Monday to see if she can advise on diet or maybe refer me to a gastroenterologist.

Hope you get some help with yours too x
