Yoga pre/post hysterectomy?

Hi

Anyone out there who does regular yoga practice?  I used to do it but haven't for a couple of years and I feel that my core and pelvic muscles are probably not in good shape.  With a hysterectomy scheduled for 14 Jan I was thinking it would be good to work on those before the op?   I presume most stretching exercises are off the agenda for 3-4 weeks after the op but any suggestions for gentle yoga moves that help with recovery?   This is all part of my need to take control of this pathway I'm suddenly on!

  • Hi there, I noticed you hadn't had any replies. I don't know anything about yoga before / after hysterectomy I'm afraid. If you've been allocated a specialist nurse she might be able to advise you. Your local Macmillan centre may run specialist exercise classes for women with cancer (ours does) so maybe ring your local branch and have a chat with them. Exercise is important to your recovery (and to feeling in control) and you'll be encouraged to start with gentle walking, building up gradually over a few weeks. Stretching /bending is difficult in the early weeks, especially if you have abdominal surgery so do seek the advice of your surgeon too - as mine said about walking etc "you don't want to undo my handiwork!" I hope all goes well with your surgery and that it won't be too long till you can resume some gentle yoga. x

  • Hi RollercoasterRide, I  was been going to a gentle yoga class for around 10 years. Following my  surgery in August I took  3 months off, though to be fair I think I could of gone back 6 weeks after, my CNS nurse said it would be ok when I  went to see her about the patient initiated follow up. I think I got out of the habit  but I'm  glad I'm back doing yoga now. Very gently.

  • Hi rollercoasterride,

my team told me to exercise before my op, I done a 5 min abs work out every day and went walking when I could, I'd check with your doctor or CNS before you start exercising though to make sure it's ok for your circumstances. The hospital gave me a booklet of gentle exercises that I could do after my operation to strengthen my core again, there's a similar one from another nhs area on line, let me know if you don't get one and I'll post the link.

Your body is really good at letting you know when you have done too much, it pulls or tightens.

    lots of love

  • Thanks Arla.

I'm having my pre-op on Dec 30th so I'll see if they give me exercise tips then.  In the meantime I'm walking/swimming and doing some pelvic exercises to keep in shape.  I agree that I need to listen to my body and not try to do too much, too soon, but I can't really imagine what it's going to feel like suddenly having a 'gap' in my body where there used to be an organ - weird!
