Worrying Like Crazy

Good morning everyone,

I have recently been diagnosed with a re-occurence and the cancer has shown it's ugly face in the tube that leads from the kidney to the bladder. I am scheduled to start chemo (again) on Wednesday 18 Dec. However, I have really bad upper abdominal pain, I have no appetite due to nausea, constantly thirsty and have now started vomiting bile. I called the emergency line yesterday and, without going into detail, they gave me Oramorph to be taken 4 times a day.

I'm worrying now over the fact it may have spread to other areas but I can't get anyone to take me seriously. When I saw my oncology team they weren't interested in the pain once they found out about the reoccurrence. I feel as though they think the pain is cancer related but won't tell me so.

The pain and nausea is like having gallstones (already had gallbladder out 3 years ago). I can't stand straight, I can't lie on my right side or front. I'm panicking and don't know how to stop.

I will contact my CNS tomorrow and hopefully she can put my mind at ease.

Thanks to anyone who reads/replies

Oh Sue, it's awful isn't it ? My lung feels fit to burst most of the time as still fluid in there, and the pain in my chest and arm makes me feel that this is spreading like wildfire ! I think the pain is referred with me , and anything to do with kidneys can be excruciating, keep up your pain relief and try and rest if you can ? Can you be seen by someone on the ward today ? I know with our hospital the duty docs will see you if necessary.  You poor thing you must be in agony, try and remember to breathe, my mum suffered with her kidneys from the age of 14 she swore by lemon barly water ( weak) to help.

Sending you gentle hugs and hope you cam get he pain sorted.

Hi sue, bondgirl. I'm sorry I'm not going to be very helpful with advice for you as although I work in pharmacy and know about some things I am not a medic. I just wanted you to know that I am here to chat too. It sounds very worrying and I too would want answers and it's annoying they aren't taking you seriously on this. Maybe your CNS can help tomorrow. Just rest for now but if it gets unbearable I would call 111 or go to an urgent care centre with an a and e attached to it. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Try not to worry too much as that can make it worse(easier said than done I know) . If reads this later she may be able to help as she is in the kidney group I believe. I know your problem is in the ureter but I'm wondering if your kidney, being the nearest main organ is alerting your body to the fact  something is wrong although I thought that mainly have you back pain. Good luck ..Hope you get some advice and answers soon. Love lamb.xx

    Hi LC,

Sorry to hear about your pain, you're right, it is awful. I think the nerves of our body just make it seem worse.

I have an appointment (new patient) on Tuesday, will chat to them about it. Hopefully my CNS will have some advice.

  • Hi . Saw had mentioned me. Like everyone else, I'm not a medic, so I reckon your best bet is your CNS, tho you can ring the helpline on 0808 808 0000 am to 8pm, 7 days a week.

The Urgent Care centre with an A n E attached is a good one too, if it gets bad today.

It could well be your kidney/ ureter that's giving u all these symptoms. I remember having abdominal pain, not just back pain, when I first had problems with my kidney. They did an ultrasound on my belly n it was agonising - I knew then there was something amiss.

    Hi Little Lamb,

Thank you for your kind words and an offer of a chat.

I will definitely call my CNS tomorrow and ask her for some help. I was told yesterday to go to A&E if it got worse. I just cherish the thought of sitting there for hours waiting to see someone.

The pain is like gallbladder pain, the nausea and vomiting, too. Having been there 3 years ago, I remember quite clearly how it felt. The only difference is now it doesn't cramp. I will get answers eventually.

    Hi Ladies,

Spoke to my CNS today and after consulting the oncologist, said it sounds as though the cancer has advanced slightly. She said the sooner I get in for Chemo the better. My first one is on Wednesday. I was also told that if it gets worse then go to A&E and I will be fast tracked to see my oncologist. I was told don't stop the pain relief. I have my new patient assessment tomorrow, will see if they can throw any light on the situation.

Today I've managed to eat more. Half a bowl of chicken soup (nothing like soup for breakfast) and there is a potato in the oven as I type. The nausea seems to be less too. Strange really, but if I don't move I don't hurt. So I've lay on the sofa all day and dozed on and off. Comforted occasionally by one of my 5 cats. Bliss.

Interesting turn up. Went to my new patient assessment Tuesday and was admitted because I have an infection of unknown cause and origin. I’ve been on antibiotic and saline drip along with tablet form morphine. I will stay in hospital until they find out the cause of the infection and will then treat it accordingly. Hopefully they find out soon
