I don't know how it is done in the UK, but I was asked when I arrived in the pre.surgery/recovery room whether I was nervous and did I need a "calmante" (I didn't), but not before then. I certainly wouldn't take any such medication without prior approval from the anaesthetist, they need to know exactly what the patient has taken or it could be unsafe.
I didn't meet the surgeon who was going to be operating on me until a few minutes before surgery - and I never saw the same gynaecologist twice in the 3 appointments I had prior to surgery.
Did you manage to resolve your problem about the anti-coagulant injections? I hope so.

Good luck for the morning, I wouldn't take anything that your medical team haven't approved, even herbal or natural remedies. You could try some mindfulness videos from you tube, I always find that they relax me enough to sleep. Good luck for your operation, let us know how you get on when you can.
Have you had surgery before nightingale? In the old days they used to give you a premed a muscle relaxant iv then wheel you into theatre they dont do that anymore. In all my 5 cancer ops 2 different hospitals i walked to theatre and climbed onto operating table sometimes its an ante chamber. It takes quite a while to connect you to different machines put in the cannula before you are given the anaethesia. At this point they sometimes ask do you want something to relax you but they are all so kind and will chat away ive never needed it. I only met the anaethetist and surgeon on the day of the op. Morning surgery is best avoids hanging around too long my afternoon ones were interminable the wait was worse than the op!!
I was told to take nothing, and was unsure what to do about my thyroid tablets and blood pressure tablets. The anaesthetist came to see me before the operation, and told me to take the blood pressure one only, which I did while he watched!! It was only when I was actually in theatre that they gave me 'something to calm me down'.(an injection).Good job they did that as the next minute I had the mask put on me which I can remember hating as a child at the dentist. (60 years ago) My initial reaction was to push it away, but before I could I fell asleep!!!
Haha nannyanny i also hate the mask reminding me of having gas to have tooth out as a child. Coming round from 1 op the nurse said they had a real battle with me as i kept pushing it away. Last op in august they put a metal helmut on did you have that? Measures consciousness never had that before.
I hate the mask too, with me I think it’s linked with being closed in. One of the procedures I had The anaesthetist gave me the mask to hold, so I was more in control.
I didn't have a metal helmet on, at least, not that I know!! it was the bladder scanner that fascinated me. Simply because I didn't know such things existed, It showed I wasn't emptying my bladder properly, so they kept me in another night. I was quite happy about that. I'd rather they sort stuff out while I am there! I wasn't too happy when I overheard them saying 'Well, she is 72'. I felt much happier when my daughter, in her 40's, had the same problem a few months later!!! xxxxxx
