Hi All

I'm new to this site, but I found it from non stop Googling!

My mom has had pelvic pain for 3 months and a heavy feeling,so she went to the GP 3 weeks ago who took bloods and sent her for scans. The sonographer said it looked like she has fibroids or polyps and sent the results to the doctor.Just two hours later,he called my mom saying he’s not too sure what to make of the results but not to book a holiday over the next month as he’s referring her to a Gynecologist and can see her having a hysterectomy in the next month!!

I’m Going out of my mind with worry,my mom is my whole world,I can’t help but think the worst!

Can anyone relate to this?

Lou xx

    Hi Lou

I have just seen your post and am sending you both a virtual hug. You must be feeling so shocked and fearful. I am sure the lovely ladies on this forum will be along soon to offer lots of support and advice.

My experience is quite limited as I have only recently had a hysterectomy and started radiotherapy but I am recovering really well. I have found the waiting for appointments, results etc to be more stressful than anything.

Dr Google is not always very reassuring but I would try not to second guess diagnosis . Hopefully your mum won't have to wait long to see gynae consultant who will give you clear picture of what needs to be done .

    Sending you both positive wishes

    Hi Lou,

I had pelvic pain and a full feeling, in my mid 20s, ( nearly 40 years ago) and it turned out to be several fibroids, one quite big. As I wanted children,  I had the fibroids cut out instead of a hysterectomy.  If I'd completed my family I'd have just had the hysterectomy.

So, it could be fibroids which are harmless, and a hysterectomy is ok to deal with, a night or two in hospital and a few weeks recovery from the surgery. Lots, I think most, polyps are also harmless.

So please try not to worry. Even most womb cancers are very treatable.

Sending hugs to you and your mum. X

  • Hello Lou, welcome to the group, though I’m very sorry for the reasons you find yourself here. It sounds like you are very worried about your Mum and you both find yourselves in a whirlwind time of doubt and uncertainty.  Your Mum could well have fibroids and/or polyps. These are usually benign growths and can be treated quite easily. Fibroids can grow so big they press on other organs such as the bladder and if that’s the case then a hysterectomy may be recommended. However, 10% of polyps are found to be malignant and then a hysterectomy is the usual treatment. As says, please try not to second guess things. Your Mum will be referred to a gynaecologist who will probably want to do a hysteroscopy (look inside with a small camera) and biopsy which will confirm things either way. Do try to hang on to the fact that womb cancer caught early is very easy to treat with a hysterectomy often being all that’s needed. As has said, a hysterectomy is major surgery but  most ladies cope well with it - those who have a laparoscopic hysterectomy tend to recover quicker physically.

Waiting for tests and results is incredibly hard. I’d just add please try to stay off google - a lot of the information out there is unhelpful at this stage and some is out of date. Try to distract yourself if you can - plan some treats in for you and your Mum as keeping things as normal as you can does help. Finally, I’d suggest you and your Mum makes a list of questions you want to ask the Gunnar and that she takes someone with her to the gynae appointments. It’s always helpful to have a second pair of ears and thest person can prompt if your Mum forgets to ask anything.

I hope all goes well for your Mum. We all understand what you’re going through . Gentle ups to you both - please let us know how you get on x
