I had the CT scan with contrast dye today. The experience itself, while not entirely pleasant , was bearable. What I had not anticipated was the sharp stomach cramps afterwards. There was no where to sit down and recover - the Imaging waiting room was rammed and it opens out direct onto the main concourse - nowhere free to sit down there either - and exit. So I set out for the bus stop home. About a 15 minute walk from the hospital. I was surprised by how painful the stomach cramps were.. I don't know if this was the aftermath of the polyps removal last week or my on going kidney issues. I shall have to bear it in mind if I have future scans with dye. MRI coming up later this week.
I hope you are feeling a bit better now. Were you advised to drink plenty of water to help your kidneys flush out the dye? I was always advised to. It might help to do that,

No nothing was said. Assumption seemed to be I would just get off the bed and get dressed and leave.
I'm sorry to hear that you had that experience. After I had the dye for my CT scan, I felt a bid odd and wasn't sure if it was anxiety or a reaction, and the staff were very kind. They made me stay laying down for a little while after the scan, then sat me in the waiting room with a drink of water and wouldn't let me leave until they had checked me. I am fairly certain it was probably anxiety, but even so they couldn't have been more careful.
I hope your stomach cramps subside and you can relax this evening.
Hugs, Lesley xx
I felt odd and not very well in a general way after my contrast CT but also had an MRI with some stuff I had to drink the day after ( they aren't usually done that close) so wasn't sure which one it was. From what you and others here say, it seems the CT contrast may have been the culprit.
I have another CT with contrast on Wednesday ( the after treatment completion one) so I will be sure to drink plenty afterwards. Luckily the hospital is just a 20 minute drive and I can get a lift back if I need to.
Good luck with the MRI, hope it gives you no problems and I hope you feel better soon.

Hi nightingale, yes, I remember when inhad my CT scan with contrast, I felt ok straight afterwards. My OH drove me home and we stopped for some fish and chips on the way home. By the time I got home I could hardly walk because the area around the bunion on my right foot was so painful and tender. I didn't exactly have stomach cramps but remember not really wanting my fish and chips and feeling generally out of sorts. It soon wore off though. Hope your after effects go soon too xxx
Had a CT scan last September, once the contrast dye was administered I reacted to it badly, straight away I started coughing burning at the back of my throat....they did the scan quickly...then I was covered in hives, had to have antihistamines and steroids, took a couple of hours to get back to normal...think there should be some sort of test before to see if you are allergic or not....
After my first couple of scans they left the cannula in my arm and made me wait a while in the unit before I left so that they could be sure I had no reaction and that if I did they could act quickly. I had never had any scans before so I thought this was normal practice. As it happened I was fine.
If you are unlucky enough to have any adverse reaction after a procedure it is really important to let them know about it in the future. In theory they should ask about such things every time but we are all human and sometimes they may forget. Same goes if you are on anticoagulants!
