Has anyone had a picu dressing? Meant to have it taken off tomorrow but our surgery has no nurses as they have 2 off sick.

I have an appointment on Friday afternoon and have checked with hospital who say that will be fine..

But its sooooo itchy. And beginning to peel off one end. Right at each end it's slightly painful ~ nothing more than a bit of hair being pulled but so annoying.

Yes nina. Been there, done it and got the t shirt! They can be really annoying and I too was trying not to tear myself apart with the itching. They are prone to people reacting to them so tell the nurse when you get it changed of taken off. Unfortunately there's not a  lot you can do because if you interfere with it it affects the negative pressure applied. I was tapping the area on top and around it to try and relieve the itching . It helped a bit . I was meant to have mine on untouched for seven days but had to contact the nurses after two because the exude had saturated the dressing and it was leaking over my clothing and bedsheets. I had it reapplied but again it was saturated after two days so they took it off and tried something else contacting the tissue viability nudes who recommended a VAC pump which is stronger and copes with vast volumes of exude which I had. Try and to!erate it until they take it off. You have my sympathy meantime! God bless love lamb.xx

    Hi Nina

Sorry you are being delayed in having dressing removed. Have you tried antihistamine tablets.  I have lots of skin allergies so know what it feels like to be so itchy and they may help you with your itching. Obviously check with a health professional first in case they interfere with other medications you are taking.

It's normal to feel like you are not coping and feel useless so don't be so hard on yourself. Things will improve gradually and these feelings will change.

Hope you feel a bit better soon x

  • Good idea re antihistamines. Did have some cream somewhere but had to take that to H when she had a wasp sting. I've had worse itching and they were very aware of my various sensitivity stuff. Just bit concerned when they try and remove it!!! All new things.

  • Hi Nina,

I think we all have days when we can't cope. I distinctly remember one day when I had a broken shoulder, some 15 years ago. My arm was in a sling and I couldn't move it (too painful, left arm, fortunately). My husband had gone to work leaving the top unscrewed off a lemonade bottle for me. What I hadn't thought about was lifting a heavy bottle with one hand! I tried, the bottle tipped and the whole lot went all over the counter top and floor!!! I just burst into tears thinking 'I can't even get a drink of lemonade now'!!!

It will pass and you will get better each day.  xxxxxx
