Hi all. At my pre op appt on Monday they mentioned that I'm anaemic based on my bloods three weeks ago! Over the past few weeks I've been feeling very tired, dizzy and breathless which I had put down to anxiety!
I feel a bit peeved that I haven't been told this sooner. I've started taking ferrogloblin but the pre op nurse seemed doubtful this would make a huge difference by next week. I've also got a mouthful of ulcers and feel pretty run down.
Has anyone gone iin for their op whilst anaemic? Did it affect your recovery at all? I'm also worried about the supplement making me constipated which I definitely don't want!
Hi Claracat,
I have no experience of anaemia, but have with constipation and iron tablets! I had difficult pregnancies and couldn't strain, and iron made me constipated. I remember taking something mixed with water. After my hysterectomy my daughter advised MOVICAL. It was very gentle, and softens the stools, so I found it perfect. It must be similar to what I used 40ish years ago!!! xxx
I was anaemic for several years before my op as a result of excess bleeding caused firstly by fibroids and then also the cancer. I was taking liquid iron for months to address the problem but was still borderline when I had my op and was fine. One other thing, I suspect I have been anaemic for a long time because I had a hip replacement over 10 years ago and was severely anaemic afterwards......They had to give me some blood back as well as pills to address it. As a result I was a little dizzy the first few times they got me up, but I did recover quite quickly. Btw, I have found the liquid iron didn't cause me nearly so many digestive issues as the tablets did.
Thanks nannyanny and teddy'smum.
That's helped reassure me. Guess I will keep taking the liquid for a while and see what happens at the op.
I had an extended Lletz under GA a month ago, so have had bleeding from that, the cancer and just had a really heavy period. The joys of being a woman!
