Hello all, just a quick query. My mother was recently diagnosed with probable Stage 1B endometrial cancer and will have a hysterectomy via keyhole surgery. We're a little worried at how long it is taking to book the operation - she was informed two weeks ago that it could be within 4-6 weeks, but it is all a bit vague. Obviously we are anxious that the cancer will spread in the meantime.
Could someone please inform me of the rate of growth of this particular form of cancer? Thanks in advance!
Hi RobeH,
Did they tell you the grade of the cancer? The grade dictates the speed, mine was grade 1, slow growing, grade 2 is a little quicker and grade 3 is a bit quicker again. It took about five weeks for me to have my operation, from reading posts here 4-6 weeks is pretty standard regardless of the grade of cancer. I think we imagine cancer ravaging through the body at an increadible speed but in reality it takes time to grow.
Have they offered your mother any treatment in the meantime? I had a Mirena coil whilst I waited, but I was pre menopause.
The helpline might be able to give you an idea of how fast it grows, in real time,
Xx
Hello I think I read in this forum somewhere that most early stage low grade endometrial cancer is slow growing and not as fast as our imaginations would lead us to believe. However I’m not a medic so I’d suggest you give your Mum’s Clinical Nurse Specialist a call in the morning. She’ll have access to your Mum’s notes and should hopefully be able to put both of your minds at rest. It can seem like a long wait between diagnosis and the op itself. We imagine all sorts of things going on in our bodies but that isn’t necessarily the reality. If it helps, I was diagnosed with an aggressive, high grade form of womb cancer and I had just under 4 weeks between diagnosis and surgery. Waiting is so hard sometimes but try to plans and do some nice things with your Mum while you wait. It really can help and it gives you lots of good things to talk about during recovery. Thinking of you both and sending lots of good wishes that this time passes more quickly and more pleasurably than you anticipate. x
Hello robeH, what arla and fairycake have said is all good advice and the stage one early cancers are slow growing but vary in their types and the grades dictate their rate of growth..but they don't accelerate suddenly and go everywhere which once you get diagnosed with this pesky disease is watching naturally think because you want it gone there and then. I was four weeks from actually being told they suspected cancer to actually being operated on and that was seven weeks ago. I was diagnosed stage 1 a, grade2. I would contact your mother's nurse, as fairycake mentioned to reassure you and you can also ask any further questions you have as well. I hope your mum isn't waiting too long for her operation now and everything goes smoothly with a good outcome. God bless you.x
Thank you all for the replies. My mother's cancer has been diagnosed at probable Stage 1B.
Hi RobeH,
I had my operation booked in for 6 weeks, after diagnosis. They then sent for me 2 weeks early (worried me sick), only to be cancelled at the last minute due to an emergency. I was actually operated on on my original date and the result was the same. The two week delay made no difference. I was Grade 2 stage 1A. Try not to worry too much. I think they do a good job of prioritising. xx
