?I had a total hysterectomy 6 weeks ago due to womb cancer. Have recovered well and felt ok. However this week i have been so tired. Just like i was before the operation. My back is aching so much.

Is this normal?? I know they have done all the scans etc and they told me they were sure it was confined but i cant help but worry

  • Hi debsaz, from what all the other ladies have said here it's clear we all recover at different rates etc, but you are still in very early stages. I'd say it would be really surprising if you weren't tired quite a bit at the moment. Your body is working hard to repair itself, it won't have much left for anything else. Lots if us have found we have issues with tiredness for many months after treatment. Regarding the back pain, I haven't any experience of that immediately post op and I'm not a medic so I can't be sure what's causing it, but have you thought at all about your posture? Are you holding yourself differently or tensely because of your operation? I would always suggest having a chat with your CNS about anything that's worrying you. I always find I feel a lot better if I've checked any worries out with her.

  • Hi ,

6 weeks is still very early days. I know I found that fatigue hits at strange times, I think we have to remember that our body takes a lot of energy to heal from surgery that often there isn't much left. Have you spoken with your team about this? Judging by what others have said that this level of triedness is normal in our recovery, I think its normal to be worried about it too. Be kind to yourself and I hope you feel better soon. With your back again sometimes this is part of recovery because things have been banged about but worth mentioning to your CNS.

  • Hi debsaz

6 weeks is still very early days. Your body is still healing and tiredness isn’t unusual but do speak to your CNS with any concerns- she has access to your notes and should be able to reassure and advise you. Whilst we expect to zing back into action by about 12 weeks (depending on the type of surgery) my Gynae-oncologist told me it can take up to a year for everything to heal up properly. Listen to your body - don’t over do things, pace yourself and rest if you need to. Most of all try not to compare your recovery to anyone else’s because we are all different and heal at different rates. Be kind to yourself - you’ve been through major surgery and you need time to heal both physically and emotionally. Sending you lots of good wishes for your recovery x

  • Hi Debs,

i agree with everything the others are saying, it's totally normal to be tired. Did your hospital give you a physio booklet? They gave me one with gentle exercises to help my back recover. id still give your CNS a ring though, it's good to keep them up to date.

    lots of love

Hi, thank-you for the reply’s. I was only given a CNS at my post op check up 2 weeks ago. I haven't yet met them although i do have an appointment for the 28th to see them for a chat to see how i am doing. Think i might have to give them a quick ring before that though even if only to put my mind at rest.
