Hi everyone, this is my first post. I hope it’s okay to post in here as I haven’t actually been diagnosed with anything as of yet.
My story is quite long winded. A few years ago now I was diagnosed with CIN 3 and had Lletz treatment to get rid of it. Everything was fine up until last year when symptoms returned but worse than before. My periods are horrendous, I’ve always passed clots but these are massive, awful back pain, constipation, breakthrough bleeding and pain when having intercourse.
I finally booked myself in to the doctors in December last year thinking the cells had returned but the doctor told me she couldn’t do a smear due to me not being ready for my recall. She referred me to a gynaecologist for them to do further tests, referred me for a scan to see if it could be anything else and also did an internal while I was there where she found a polyp on my cervix.
I attended my scan as this appointment was before the gynae and I got called back in to the surgery for my results where I was told I had a 19mm think endometrium. She advised that she would be sending me for a repeat scan. This is where I am going to sound stupid, the doctor didn’t stress the importance, when I heard think womb lining I assumed I had endometriosis or something and so I cancelled all of my gynae and future scan appointments. I have a son with additional needs so he has been more of a priority.
Anyway fast forward to last week and my doctor rang me, she wasn’t happy with me cancelling my appointments. I confirmed that I would attend my next gynae appointment but asked whether the scan was really important and that’s when she dropped the bombshell. She told me if my scan results were those of a woman in her 50’s or 60’s she’d be getting diagnosed with cancer. I have to have another scan at a different tjme of my cycle to see how thick my lining is as apparently 19mm is very abnormal.
I have my next scan on the 24th of this month and gynae on the 25th. I guess I’m just looking for advice on what else it may be other than cancer, or the likelihood of it being cancer? I’m only 31. I realise that no one here can diagnose me but if anyone here has similar stories, similar age, similar womb lining then I’d love to hear any advice.
Sorry I’ve rambled so much and thank you
Hey there Robin,
First off.... You silly billy cancelling appointments. No more of that going forwards please.
The most common diagnosis after finding a thick lining is hyperplasia. This can then become atypical, then develop into cancer and this is what happened to me, I'm currently 37, started odd bleeding at 32. However, finding cancer is actually really rare especially at your age, so don't jump to conclusions just yet.
If it is hyperplasia, even atypical, then it can be sorted with the Mirena Coil and some oral progesterone. This stops your body growing a lining, which would also sort your horrendous periods out too.
Hope that helps.

Hi Lass,
Thank you so much for reading all of that and taking the time to reply to me.
I have just googled hyperplasia and I do feel slightly better now. I think it was just because the doctor mentioned cancer and it hadn’t been mentioned before, it sent my head in to overdrive. Also because I was expecting it to be CIN again and not something unrelated.
Sorry to hear what you’ve been through. I will definitely not be skipping any more of my appointments now I know the importance of them. Xx
Not a problem at all, and your post really wasn't that long. I've def seen, and written, longer. Lol
You may find that the Dr mentioned cancer just to make sure you didn't cancel any more appointments. Because while the chances of it being cancer are slim, there is a small possibility of it. And it is very definitely better dealt with sooner rather than later if it is.
But good luck with your appointments, and any questions or worries then do pop back anytime and we'll help where we can!

Hi Robin,
I'm sorry you find yourself here but I'm really encouraged that your Dr is chasing you.
I was diagnosed with endometrial cancer at the age of 37 after being told that I couldn't possibly have cancer at a young age and so not to worry when I too had a small polyp and thickened lining. My periods were awful but that was a big change for me. I was told it was 'just' hormones and fobbed off.
I'm hoping your story is different to mine as Lass is right; there's a slim chance it's cancer but best to be checked, please do go for the appointments. If caught early, easier to treat. Lots of reassurance on here whatever happens so you've found a helpful bunch to reach out to.
All the best,
Clare
