Does a ureteric stent cause even more pain?

Hi Everyone, My husband had a prostatectomy 2-3 years ago. That was followed by 33 sessions of radiotherapy which still didn't get it all and he's now on hormone therapy. The radiotherapy damaged his ureter and he's been waiting to have a stent fitted, on the urgent  list, since July. He's frequently in pain day and night. I've heard that the stent can cause as much pain as the kidney not draining. Does anyone have any experience of side effects from a ureteric stent? I've called PALS to try and push the op forward, but now they say it might not be before next March. I'm wondering if it would it be better to have it done privately, but I don't want to put him in any more pain if it could make it worse. They've already said that there is little chance of saving the kidney. I'd be grateful for any suggestions.

  • Hi

The pain your husband is in must be awful for both you and your husband to have to deal with.

I don't have any experience with what you're asking and have used the search bar in this group for previous posts on this topic without success. However, when I widened the search I found that Daloni gave this link to a leaflet about having a uretic stent inserted and, whilst it obviously isn't as good as hearing about someone's experience, I thought it might help.

I had a JJ uretic stent fitted when they diagnosed my advanced PC, because the right kidney had more or less packed up due to a blocked ureter - caused by spread of the tumour. The stent was in for 11 months and has just been replaced. I had no pain from it at all and swapping it was done under general anaesthetic, and i was out the same day. I don't know whether my right kidney does much these days but there is no pain or discomfort so it has not been an issue for me.

Just seen your post. I am 92 with stage 4 Terminal pc and only have one kidney. Had a stent done about three years ago and then replaced 6 months later as they told me it should be replaced regularly. Had a bit of trouble with first passing blood but no pain. Next one done well and no problems. It has not been replaced as they are concerned that at my age I could not stand the anaesthetic!! So it’s been in for over two years with no pain or waterworks problems. I continue to live a reasonably normal life for a 92 year old. Hope this helps

  • Hi

Iam a cancer victim but two years ago I got two kidney stones ( extremely painful ) I had a stent put in and I may be different to others but, every time I went to the toilet, I was standing on my toes with the pain. I had the stent in for around three months, not a happy person. Hope this helps.
