One of my favourite travel writers Bill Bryson travels around the human body. Loads of facts but very readable in his own inimitable  manner. . In his chapter on Cancer he  mentions Prostate Cancer and says half of men over 60 and  three quarters of men over 70  have Prostate cancer at death without knowing it  In fact if all men lived long enough they will all get prostate cancer he writes.  At £25 a little dear but you find out how much of the bodies organs  works. Just possibly a Penguin Edition  exists and may be  cheaper. Published 2019.

In the chapter on Skin he says 90% of people in the northern hemisphere are deficient in Vitamin D for much  of the year. I seem to remember that in the booklet  on Hormone Therapy loss of Calcium may occur from the bones leading to Osteiporosis.. So when I saw a container on Morrisons (probably elsewhere too) shelves containing  120 tablets of Vitamin D plus Calcium I bought some. Helps  maintain bones and teeth and   Vitamin D contributes to normal absorption and utilisation of Calcium the label  says. You pays your money and makes your choice. Every little helps. especially if you don't get outdoors  so often.

Linus Pauline (2 Nobel Prizes) maintained  that a high daily dose of Vitamin C kept his Prostate Cancer at bay for 20 years but since then some of his theories have largely been discredited.  Vit C does not keep colds at bay.

    Sounds like an interesting book.

Generally I think people should take an interest in all the things that take place in the body, but as someone who used to lecture in human anatomy and physiology recognise it can be a very complicated and very dry subject.  Good then to hear of a book that makes it interesting and enjoyable to read.

Advice on all these supplements can be overwhelming  particularly when it comes to "preventing cancer".  I read that tomatoes can help prevent prostate cancer (PCa)  (It's the red colour = lycopene).  I must have drunk gallons of ketchup before I was diagnosed with PCa.  It didn't work then.  It's since been discredited although I still love ketchup.

I took selenium ACE for years, (antioxidants) claimed to prevent all sorts of things, including growing older.  I stopped taking it when I got older.

I currently take iron, magnesium, vitamin B12 and vitamin D, but this is for my Willis Eckbom Disease.  I do recognise we don't get enough vit D in the UK, especially.  You have to figure that when your solar garden lights aren't getting charged up, your own battery's going flat.

The latest popular "cure it all" seems to be CBD oil.  A recent BBC survey of 9 CBD oil products, showed that at least 2 of them were illegal and one actually had no CBD in it at all.

If you took all the supplements we're urged to take for our various ailments, it'd be cheaper to take out shares in Holland and Barratt.

CBD oil is the new "Snake oil". Cures everything. Plus using it makes you feel slightly naughty.

  • It never did anything for me and I bought and used on the advice of a pharmacist.  Having said that I have a friend in the Maggies Walnut Club who swears it is keeping his PSA down,  That, of course, could be a placebo effect.  Who knows?
