Arm pain or ache

Hi Everyone, hope you all safe and well coping with your treatment and Covid madness.

I have seen many previous posts describing pain or ache in their arm where they have treatment. However they all mentioned the pain was stopped after inserting a Piccline or a port.  I am interested to know if any one else is experiencing ache or pain in their arms where they are having the treatment, while having a Piccline which is what i have. I mean any port for the chemo infusion other than a cannula. As my treating team find it weird and not sure if the pain is from the medication, nephropathy or a possible desk.

Anyone have experienced anything similar, I'd love to hear from you.

  • Hi,

I assume your team have checked you for a possible blood clot? As that ‘can’ occasionally happen after vein damage from the chemo.

hope it resolves soon for you

  • Hey there - I had horrid deep bone pain that kept me up for 24hrs several days after one treatment in the forearm and wrist the infusion was administered.  It went from deep penetrating pain, to more superficial, vein pain in the hand and forearm which lasted for another week!

Docs decided due to this to give me a Picc line, and whilst I've only had it a week, I'm also just shy of a week out of my last treatment and have had zero pain in the arm.  I was hospitalised the week before with neutropenic sepsis and my bloods were taken all the time, so my veins were screaming for some rest.  So far, I'm really happy with the Picc, which was a painless procedure.  Bloods will be drawn from this line going forward (including infusions), so very happy the line is there.  Good luck with whatever you decide to do and I hope you're not experiencing any more pain.

  • PS can they x ray you to check that there are no kinks in the line?

  • Thank you very much Pod5, sorry for the late reply.

  • Hi Moomy and Pod 5, thank you for your reply and the useful advises. I did ask my oncologist to do an ultrasound, but it turned to be clear, no blood clot. But my nurse suggest it is the Dacarbazine that might cause the pain.

  • Glad you’ve had a scan and there’s no clot, these drugs do cause problems even though they kill the cancer!
Hope all goes well from now on, they will probably keep a closer eye on you, vein-wise. It may help keeping a heat pad over the cannula through to vein area which they may well suggest. Also do drink lots of water especially on chemo day as that should help too.
