Hi Folks

Finally had time to update on hubby.  Following blood test taken at hospital last thursday (and after I had posted) Consultant rang hubby to say that the test had shown ZERO thyroxine.  Lab was so concerned they ran second test on his blood,, tested their procedures, etc and then tested someone else's blood for comparison.  No wonder hubby was sleeping so much, had no energy, dizziness etc.  Likeliest explanation is that the operation had affected the blood supply to thyroid gland which has ceased working.  All yet to be confirmed with scans etc but he will now start on liquid thyroxine as he is tube fed sometime today as it is special order and local chemists do not stock it.

I will leave out the rant about wanting thyroid function checking weeks ago - prefer to consign it to history.

Hopefully over the next few weeks he will improve physically and be able to enjoy life a little more.

Great to share some good news.

Take care all and stay safe x

Margaret

  • Crikey Margaret.  Yes, that would account for those symptoms.  Really horrible and disconcerting as I also had an underactive thyroid after treatment but nowhere near as low as your husband's.  Thank goodness it's been diagnosed and hopefully he'll start to feel much better soon.

All the very best to you both.

  • Thank heavens you’ve got to the bottom of it.
My first husband had radiotherapy to his larynx and had the same problem. He put on weight was dizzy and cold all the time. He began to lose his hair. His GP had no answer. Then one day I found him collapsed  in the bathroom. I had a lightbulb moment and decided it was his thyroid and I was right

in a month he was transformed into the active man I always  knew.

  • Good evening Margaret, wow that's quite alarming especially as you had mentioned it to them before, i must admit i don't know anything about the thyroid gland, I suppose because it was not affected. I have learned so much from this post so thanks for posting this update. As you say let's hope the next few weeks will see a big improvement for your husband. Wishing you and hubby all the best, take care, be good.
