Hi all

Thought I'd give you an update as Harry is coming to the end of week 2 this Tuesday .

Taste has all gone now , saliva is reduced but still there. A couple of ' tender' areas to each side of tongue . His affected lymph node on his neck has visibly reduced though is still palpable . Thursday's seem to be worst the day after chemo . He is shattered- as they give the dexamethasone IV I'm sure this was why he was wide awake for 4 hours too - so was I .We are also sent home with 3 days of dexamethasone.

Very little nausea - we have Maxalon as well as Dex .Appetite has definately reduced - a LOT. He is still eating but we have moved on to milky coffees - made with fortified milk and home made milk shakes full of cream, ice cream etc. It will be interesting to see what he weighs tomorrow plus protein powder, I personally think he has lost weight , I know this is likely.

He has had his RIG in situ for 2 weeks ( tomorrow ) it is not in use at the moment. It has a slight infection so abx are being taken for that  along with iodine dressings which I am doing at home. No problems with swallowing as yet. Getting as much caphosol as we can . In fact the hospital are really good at anything we ask for.

Hope every one is doing well and having a good weekend

  • Hi lisa

    plod on day by day

As you’ve found effects kick in now

I ended up after my first RT thinking, “ Hey this is a doddle” Joy despite what I’d read here

The second  day my submandibular salivary glands swelled remarkably which brought me down to Earth.
Keeping drinking a lot helps, even while waiting for RT.
    Rooting for you both.
    xx

  • Hi Lisa

5% I was told before my team started getting twitchy but I guess it depends on your build.

The appetite is an issue. I had to force myself to eat. There were weeks when I couldn't be bothered about eating at all.

Are you getting some aloe vera on that neck immediately after RT? That's the best time to use it.

    Keep going Slight smile

  • Hi there Lisa

Just read your thread and thought Id pop on and say hi. My hubby was diagnosed with tonsil cancer stage 3 with lymph node tumours in Dec 2015 and he had 5 cycles of Cistplatin chemo and 30 sessions of VMAT radiotherapy over 6 weeks. He also had a neck dissection in July 2016 but has been in remission and cancer free since then.
I thought Id say hi as although its gruelling for the one goung through the treatment it can also be a lonely time for their loved ones too as its difficult for friends to understand what you’re both going through. Im a nurse and even though I understood what was happening I found the lack of control really hard to handle as I felt I should be able to do more to alleviate his symptoms but couldn't.
It sounds like you’re doing a fantastic job - hang in there and you’ll both get through this difficult time. Remember to take care of you as well as he’ll need you to be strong as the treatment progresses.

Wishing you loads of luck and if I can be of any gelp then please ask away.

    Emma xx
