Oral cancer worry

Hello, some of you may know me as I have posted on a couple of different other groups on here. I want to start by saying yes I do suffer with health anxiety and I am currently undergoing therapy for this. But this does not stop me from worrying. Iv worried about many parts of my body over the years thinking I have cancer. It’s a massive fear of mine(and everybody else).

what I am here for is to see if anybody has had any similar symptoms to what I am experiencing. Before I start I just want to say I have a follow up appointment with my GP tomorrow and also an emergency dentist appointment tomorrow.

around 6 weeks ago I came across a pea size lump on the side of my neck, I think it’s soft and it definitely moves, no pain. This hasn’t grown in size, I don’t think. I had neck pain for 2 weeks straight which has finally cleared up. I had what seemed to be a cut behind my top front teeth about 4 weeks ago which cleared up but last week it came back and it causes like a burning tingling sensation and my front teeth to ache. For the last 2 evenings my whole set of teeth are throbbing in pain but by the morning it’s gone. Iv noticed my tonsils look a little enlarged and sore but again no pain, no difficulty swallowing etc. Also my gums seems to look really red with lighter patches through it and I think I have what looks to be a pimple on my top gum.

now besides the HA I am absolutely terrified that this is cancer and that all the times I thought I had cancer and didn’t I won’t be so lucky this time round.

can anyone shed some advice and reassurance and any similar experiences you have been through.

thankyou xx

  • Thankyou, I have had my GP appointment via telephone and she is going to examinE me next week and if unhappy send me for an ultrasound on my neck. Waiting to be seen by the dentist now! Xx

  • Good evening everyone,

after seeing the dentist today, she confirmed I have the beginning of gingivitis. She said I have nice strong teeth and has booked me in for a deep clean in 2 weeks time. I did ask her if she suspected oral cancer to which she replied no. Are dentists confident in this area of expertise? I mean a lot of google says dentists can refer you if they think you do have oral cancer. Once I had come out of the dentist this morning I was fine, plodding along with my own stuff throughout the day, only now I’m second guessing what she’s saying and gone back to thinking maybe it’s(C)  in my tonsils!!! Would the dentist have picked up on abnormalities in the tonsils? I have one tonsil bigger than the other and noticed this a while back. Think I’m just overthinking this alongside the lump I have in my neck which has been there about the same amount of time. Anxiety again setting in. Sorry if I’m being annoying!! Some of you have had it tough going through all of this horrible stuff and I’m wallowing! The dentist did give me a list of things I need to do to help the gingivitis. Just worried she’s has got it wrong or it’s in a different part of the mouth. Again sorry for going on xxx

  • Hi Mummyofthree, the people you saw today are very highly skilled people who spent many years learning their trade, i think we all agreed yesterday that going on google is so wrong, all of us on this forum have had oral related cancers and i would never question my consultant's diagnoses against something on Google. By all means, ask us for advice and not google that's what we are here to try and help you. I do understand people with anxiety as my son suffers from it. I think during these troubled times the medical personal are rushed off their feet battling this Coronavirus thankfully they are still trying to see people who might or have cancer. See how you go with your clean up as im sure it will make you feel better . Take care,be safe.

  • Hello again Mummyofthree

You have made your dentist aware of your worries and she has likely taken extra care and time to look in your mouth and throat to reassure you. Dentists are trained to find oral cancer and are often the ones who refer to hospital. You know yourself that the doubts creep in fairly quickly despite a thorough reassurance, it's part of your condition yet you can't resist the fear. Do you have any coping mechanisms? Can you contact whoever is seeing you for your anxiety...because that is the problem not any potential failure on your dentist's part.

You aren't overthinking ...it's what happens.

The next wait is to see your doctor. Please tell your doctor that even if you get a clean bill of health you will be back in turmoil in a few hours. Ask if there is any more help available.

Hang on in there, when this Covid stuff is done there will be more help available

  • Hi Chris thankyou for your reply. I’m trying so hard to tell myself that everything is ok but the more I do the more I want to google and the more I find stuff that’s concerning! I just want to know what type of oral cancer did you have? If you don’t mind me asking and any symptoms? Along with my swollen tonsil I have on and off pain in the other side of my throat and that same side my tongue hurts and looks like there is something on the side of it right at the back, which maybe the dentist could have missed? I’m sure the other side looks the same just not as sore. I think I’m just fearing something is wrong and due to the covid it’s going to take ages to get a diagnosis and by that time it’s gonna be incurable! Sounds dramatic I know! Thankyou for listening to me.

    xx

  • Hello dani

im just worried something was missed and then I panic even more that the doctor is going to miss it aswell. Or fob me off especially in these weird times. As I just said to Chris I have pain in my throat on and off but not the same side as my swollen tonsil, also the same side my tongue seems to have a sore on it that’s been there a while again, pain comes and goes, I think more so when I’m thinking about it. Trouble is I know myself the more I google the more I have the symptoms. I’m just terrified I really am. I have another phone appointment with my therapist on Monday I just don’t think it’s as effective as face to face which obviously can’t be helped. Just feel like another week is ages to wait to see the doctor and what if it is cancer and it’s spreading fast!! I never ever used to be like this, I have always been a worrier but never to this extent! It’s frightening.

Thankyou for listening to me xx

  • Mummy are you on any medication for your anxiety? It’s maybe something you should bring up with your GP.
I see you’ve posted in the ask a nurse section. You know the Macmillan support line is open 7 days a week from 8am to 8pm. The number is 08088080000

You might find actually talking to somebody helpful.

  • I have been prescribed sertraline but I stupidly read the side affects and one of them frightened me and I couldn’t bring myself to take it! That’s how bad I am! I have spoken to about 4 different people through phone call and message and the last one I spoke to wasn’t very helpful so it put me off asking again :( xx
