Selective neck dissection - share experiences on recovery

Hi All,

It’s 10 days since the above surgery. The maxillofacial surgeon took out Levels 1-4 lymph nodes and muscle tissue on the right side..unfortunately he had to cut the great auricular nerve, so I have no feeling of my right ear or parotid gland area. Same for the affected neck area but hopefully that will come back eventually.

For those that have had this procedure, is it normal to feel like you have a metal brace around your neck due to the tightness and swelling and for it to feel rock hard under the skin above the cut line? How long was it before that eased? Are we talking weeks or months? Are there any other symptoms or side effects that are likely to crop up?

I had dissolvable stitches underneath the cut and on the surface the scar is healing quite well so far, but is there anything I can be doing to help the overall healing along. I’m taking a high dose turmeric supplement as an anti inflammatory, doing my assigned exercises, eating healthily (cutting out as much sugar as possible) and putting Vaseline along the cut line.

Would be grateful to hear your own experiences.

Thank you.

  • Hi. I had a neck dissection with 58 nodes removed. I was told they hadn’t cut any major nerve. I had numbness around my ear, face, neck and a mandible palsy that lasted about 2 months before gradually improving. 9 months on my face and neck still feel ‘heavy’ and I have what I imagine will now be a permanent numb area in my neck. I’ve kind of got used to it but do get a lot of stiffness in my neck.

  • Not very encouraging but thank you anyway x

  • Hi. I’ve just got used to it and don’t think about it day to day. I figure this is my new norm and in the grand scheme of things I still feel lucky that this is all I have to deal with.

  • Hi I had mine done on 18th feb and the actual scar healed amazingly quick, I was very surprised. No one told me how to care for mine so I've been using Aveeno.

I don't know how many lymph nodes were removed. I'm still getting pain in my ear but was told to expect that they could damage a nerve and it might go eventually.

  • I think what I’m struggling more with is the feeling of almost strangulation due to the hardness under the skin and lots of swelling from the cut upward to the jaw. Although the upside is an impressive neck lift effect instead of usual scraggly neck! I suppose wasn’t expecting it to this level. It’s so tight that at times I feel it’s affecting my windpipe and I feel a little panicked.

  • Good evening, Raewyn. I had stiffness and hard skin after my neck dissection. I must admit they try to hide the scar as much as possible, and it will be barely visible to strangers in time. The hardness will slowly improve, taking months rather than weeks. I used to use bio oil once everything had healed up, as it helps with skin recovery. All the best for your continued recovery.

  • Thank you Chris! After reading your profile, for you to say it’s worth it is a testament of your own strength and determination!

  • Hi Raewyn, I had base of tongue surgery and neck dissection two weeks ago. Had my staples out a few days ago and yes, it does feel like a hard ridge underneath the incision. Being terminally vain, I have to admit to feeling extremely jealous of your "neck lift effect" - I've got a little swollen pouch under my chin that wasn't there before and I look like a bullfrog at the moment ! I haven't experienced much tightness, mainly numbness. You probably feel a lot of restriction in your neck because you're very swollen at the moment. It's early days yet and when the swelling subsides, I'm sure it'll ease. All the best, Linda.
