Oral cancer worry

Hello, some of you may know me as I have posted on a couple of different other groups on here. I want to start by saying yes I do suffer with health anxiety and I am currently undergoing therapy for this. But this does not stop me from worrying. Iv worried about many parts of my body over the years thinking I have cancer. It’s a massive fear of mine(and everybody else).

what I am here for is to see if anybody has had any similar symptoms to what I am experiencing. Before I start I just want to say I have a follow up appointment with my GP tomorrow and also an emergency dentist appointment tomorrow.

around 6 weeks ago I came across a pea size lump on the side of my neck, I think it’s soft and it definitely moves, no pain. This hasn’t grown in size, I don’t think. I had neck pain for 2 weeks straight which has finally cleared up. I had what seemed to be a cut behind my top front teeth about 4 weeks ago which cleared up but last week it came back and it causes like a burning tingling sensation and my front teeth to ache. For the last 2 evenings my whole set of teeth are throbbing in pain but by the morning it’s gone. Iv noticed my tonsils look a little enlarged and sore but again no pain, no difficulty swallowing etc. Also my gums seems to look really red with lighter patches through it and I think I have what looks to be a pimple on my top gum.

now besides the HA I am absolutely terrified that this is cancer and that all the times I thought I had cancer and didn’t I won’t be so lucky this time round.

can anyone shed some advice and reassurance and any similar experiences you have been through.

thankyou xx

  • Hi mummyofthree

I've had a look at some of your other posts and it’s good to see that you have had some all clears and nothing was found.
Its equally good that you have managed to find somebody to help you with your health anxiety in these challenging times. It’s a truly horrid worry to cope with and I have first hand experience as my daughter suffers similarly.
Many a day has found me at the end of the phone trying to talk her down out of her panic.
As you  have an appointment with both your GP and your dentist tomorrow you should get your mind put at rest fairly quickly and it’s probably best that we avoid trying to compare lumps and bumps.
Hoping it’s nothing and wishing you luck.

  • Hello Dani,

thankyou for replying to my concerns. It’s nice to know somebody understands my anxiety. I’m sorry your daughter often feels this way too it is so debilitating to feel like this. I’m hoping it’s something that can be cleared up with antibiotics, but in my head I’m fearing the worst already, thanks to google! (Which I know I shouldn’t be doing, but it’s hard to stay away!)

I just want to know, can symptoms come and go or are they persistent? That may be a hard question for you also and if u cannot answer I will 100% understand.

    thankyou! Xx

  • Hello hazel!

I try so hard to stay away from google but it’s so hard when I have so many questions in my head that I think google will answer. I’m so nervous for my appointments tomorrow, just incase it’s the worst, I just don’t think I could take it. Wish I never felt like this.

  • Please stay off Google.
Google can tell you that you have every cancer under the sun. If you look in the right place it can also tell you you can cure it with Apricots or swimming naked in a frozen lake.
Please just hang on till tomorrow

  • I agree totally with Dani and Hazel , i have had cancer 3 times all linked with the head and neck, and not once did i look on google i relied on my consultant's diagnoses and places like this, i know this may sound hard but this has not helped your anxiety. I have had a pea-like lump in my neck since 2009 after my first operation, it was biopsied and was given the all-clear, i chose not to have it removed as i was still recovering from my first operation so i just left it alone. Im sure your consultant will tell you what, Dani, Hazel, and myself have said about google. Im 12 years clear of cancer but there are always thoughts in the back of my mind if something does not feel right so i get it checked. Good luck Mummyofthree with your appointment tomorrow. Take care

  • Hi Mummyofthree

Nobody can offer you a diagnosis except for your clinical experts.

I guess you are heading out for your appointments right now, but to offer you some comfort I had very similar symptoms in my molars on the side that I had cancer.  My dentist did not bother to see me, instead referring me straight to oral surgery.  I was checked and what I have is an infection under the tooth and the red/white bits on the gum that worried me so much was "just" the puss from the infection draining out.  When that duct blocked up then the tooth hurt like hell.  When it drained I did not notice any pain.  A good explanation from the oral surgeon helped me understand the situation.  He also thoroughly checked for oral cancer or which I was clear.

Whilst this may not be your case, I hope that hearing of someone in a similar situation who has been cleared of cancer (in that area) helps settle your mind just a little.

Good luck with the appointments and let us know how you get on.

  • Hi, Mummyofthree Good luck with your appointments today, I hope you have your mind put at rest.

    Regards Ray.

  • Hello Peter,

thankyou for sharing this with me, I am currently in the dentist waiting to be seen! I’m hoping all is ok and will update you all when I have been seen.
I had a phone appointment with my GP about the lump in my neck and she is going to examine it next Wednesday and if she is unhappy will send me for an ultrasound to start with.
