Yesterday I received my mouth care pack which consists of Biotene Moisturising Mouthwash, Benzydamine Mouthwash, Caphasol Dispersable, Flamigel RT protective gel and Duraphat Toothpaste. I have had two sessions so far 13 to go and at the moment no side effects so what advice would you give regarding the sequence of use, also I have dentures only the top I cant get on with the bottom set, I assume I need to take them out before the mouthwash etc. Please Advise
Have SALT not given you a regime?
Toothpaste 30 minutes after every meal spit don’t rinse Caphasol start at four times a day. It’s protective and has prophylactic properties so use it now . Biotene is soothing so you can use it as and when your mouth feels dry.
Benzydamine is anaesthetising and antiseptic. If your swallowing is getting painful swill round and gargle half an hour before eating.
Flamigel is for radio skin burns so if you don’t have any there is little point in using it. You are better moisturising with something like Cetraben or Aveeno. I used aloe Vera gel after every zap but absolutely nothing just before
Hope this helps

PS. Sequence. Just fit them in. At the height of my treatment I was doing something to my mouth every two hours. Don’t know about taking teeth out. Sorry. I wouldn’t have thought so

Hi Viv
Glad the radiotherapy treatment is going well so far however things can potentially get rather painful in your mouth after week 3 with ulcers although everyone is different.
I had an obturator made and was put in during my operation a year ago. It is like a dental plate that has teeth but its main purpose is to fill the hole in the roof of the mouth after the cancer was removed. I can't eat or drink without it in so its a vital bit of kit I can't do without.
I was able to remove it to clean it into week 3 but was advised by the specialist dentist who made it not to remove it after this. She said it would be too painful and could do more damage. After I finished my radiotherapy I went to her and she removed it and cleaned it for me. I kept up my mouth care during the radiotherapy but with the obturator in.
However an obturator is slightly different to a denture so advice may be different. I would check with your team about this as I am sure advice about management of dentures must be a fairly common question. They might even advise leaving the denture out altogether if it becomes too painful until after you have finished your treatment.
Best of luck with the treatment. I used to count down the weeks saying half way there, nearly there, only a few days left and take it day by day. Keep up the pain killers regularly as they really help.
