My ENT informed me that I have a benign pleomorphic adenoma in the submandibular region. He is going to schedule me to take it out with the submandibular gland.
I am glad it was found incidental to a post-dental infection procedure on the opposite side of my mouth!
One night in hospital and drain removed in the am.
Anyone else have experience with this type of surgery?
Thanks in advance.
Not malignant then. Brilliant. You must be doing cartwheels .......I would, even at my age!
They can undergo malignant transformation so they take the whole gland away.
It should be a simple operation. You'll have a drain because the surgery will leave an empty space and the body doesn't like empty spaces, filling them with fluid. The drain will take the fluid away till the area contracts of it's own accord. It shouldn't even hurt very much ;)
Good luck

Thank you Beesuit for your timely response. Yes I am grateful for the fact in the way this was found. Totally incidental because I went to see my ENT for an issue on the RIGHT after I had dental surgery. It was just a little abscess from a novacaine needle that formed way in the back where my lower jaw closes and my dentist could not even see it but it kept being sore back there so I said I have to get myself to the ENT and get to the bottom of this. He saw it and prescribed antibiotic and sent me for the CT Scan and U/S which showed the mass on the LEFT!
I feel very lucky that we found this.
My 95 year old dad who still drives and is very independent met me at the doctor's appt and came in with me because I was worried about the results. ENT told me there was a 50/50 chance that it could have been cancerous but mine was not. Very grateful.
Saw my dentist yesterday who is doing my dental implant procedure and he said oh is the ENT concerned? I said yes and I will have surgery next month to remove it. He told me that he did not even see it on the dental scan that they do.
Yes xrays won’t show soft tissue
phew. Sigh of relief. Now run away and enjoy life
