If we are in receipt of PIP benefit do we tell them if got cancer.

  • I don't know, but maybe check out the main Macmillan site - type PIP into the search bar and/or find the financial help pages.  I'm sure there is a number on there for someone you can speak to who will know the answer.

    Thanks very much

  • Who is it that's in receipt of PIP , is it you or another family member? I know my way around the benefits system a bit (more than I'd like to) so may be able to help with a bit more info, what rates you or the person in receipt are on would be useful to know as well.

    It's me

  • OK so you have to tell PIP of a change in your circumstances if (amongst other things which aren't relevant):

"The help you need or your condition changes"

Obviously you're not getting it for your cancer so the condition you are getting it for is potentially unchanged. It's possible though that maybe you need more help so it might be that you could get a higher rate than you're currently on (unless you're already on higher rate in both parts of the award). Against that you know as well as I do what a difficult process it is dealing with them so if you're comfortable with what you get then I'd probably think it's not worth adding more stress to what you're already going through.

In my case it was my wife who was getting benefit (DLA as it was back then) but I think the same applies really as I was her carer strictly speaking the help she needed changed because I wasn't able at times to care for her in the way I normally did, but we didn't inform them.

This is just my opinion and I'm no expert but that was my/our experience. If you're unsure maybe have a chat with the CAB, or indeed as has suggested call the Macmillan helpline.

My gut feeling though would be to leave it alone, you have enough on your plate already.
