Hi, my husband has just had surgery for cancer on the tongue. He had a temporary tracheostomy fitted. This has now been removed, and a special dressing on the top. He seems concerned that the wound is very wet, and the dressing needs changing a lot, 5 times today.

He is being discharged tomorrow, and I thought it may offer him a little reassurance if I could find out how long it takes for it to start drying up and healing. If anyone could offer some advice, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks

  • I also had a temporary tracheotomy but the dressing only needed changing once a day while I was in hospital for 10 days. It was not wet and healed up quite quickly after I went home probably about 2 weeks. I had the nurse come daily to change the dressing.

Perhaps get your husband to discuss with his doctor if there is an issue with the tracheotomy and ask if this is normal as maybe tracheotomies can be different in their healing.

  • Hi Paulapud, i agree with Sophie, i have had two trachies fitted and they seemed to heal ok and i cannot remember having the dressing changed 5 times a day. We do all heal up at different speeds and the body does tend to concentrate on the most important area i.e the tongue so sometimes the use special dressings to help. When they took skin and a vein from my forearm it took ages for that area to heal and the dressing needed changing quite often, so these things do happen and i the consultant must be happy with the healing process, but if in doubt please let the consultant or one of his team know that you are a bit concerned. All i can say is that it will heal up in the end just taking a bit longer. Best wishes to you and your husband during the recovery period, take care.

  • My experience was tha same as Lyn’s & Chris’ but I also remember them making sure I put my hand over the dressing firmly when I wanted to try & speak.

Thank you so much for replying. I will let him know. It's just difficult because I can't visit, so cannot ask while I'm there, and he is struggling to speak at present.

Once again, thanks for taking the time to reply

Hi little fi, thank you for taking the time to reply. They have told him the same thing. I think he is just anxious.

    I hope you are well.

    Thanks again Paula

  • I keep forgetting about the Coronavirus as it does not help, especially as he can't speak. Maybe coming from you it will be better as you will be the one caring and looking after him so its only fair you are well informed. I'm ok thanks still plodding along.
