Hi

How does everybody cope with the dry mouth and sore throat during radiotherapy, I'm so dry and hungry but nothing is working,

Thanks j x

  • Hi Juddles

    how far are you?

By the end of week three I had a nasogastric tube in place and Fortisips down that. Later I had my nutrition by pump overnight so I could concentrate on just trying different things during the day  without actually worrying about how much was going in by mouth.
Difflam mouthwash swilled around your throat 15 minutes before trying to eat can help. You can also get Oxytecaine and antacid mixture which you can gargle with then swallow. I was given Caphosol to rinse my mouth out and I felt it helped but some oncologists won’t prescribe it. Ice chips are worth trying. Keep your mouth as clean as you can. I managed to brush my teeth with my electric toothbrush but if you can’t manage that Amazon sell Curaprox toothbrushes which are really gentle.
There is a preparation called Gelclair which can help line your mouth and protect it.

Ask your RT team next time you are in. They can alert your nursing team to get you something to try.

At the height of my discomfort I was in my mouth every hour doing something!

Also don’t stint on the painkillers. Take them regularly even if you are in not too much discomfort. Pain is better controlled if  it’s not allowed to break through.

    I hope this helps.
