PEG: did it hurt after the first time you advanced and rotated? (The PEG; not yourself! )

Tried my first advance and rotation this afternoon. It didn’t hurt on the skin/outside, but now it flippin’ hurts inside! Is this normal??

  • Can't help with this one I'm afraid because the one I had fitted didn't need rotating; it was a new type and I was only the second person in my hospital to have it fitted. Was a bit of a celeb for a while with loads of nurses coming to look at it in wonder, sadly it was the tube they looked at in wonder rather than me. Slight smile

Then when I came home and the "district nurses" (they're probably not called that anymore but whatever) came round weekly to do routine maintenance on it they wouldn't believe that it didn't need rotation, had to get them to call my dietitian to confirm.

  • Hi , I didn't have a PEG but I did have a RIG, which is a similar thing. It did take a bit of settleing down when first fitted, and it did give me some pain for a while. As for turning it I had to do that two or three times a day, and sometimes it would be sore afterwards for a while. It sounds pretty normal, what you are experiencing but if you are worried about it, tell your team, when you go for your RT.

    All the best.

    Regards Ray.

  • If my memory serves me clear Allthecolours I used to turn mine a couple of times a week, it could still be a bit tender or bruised inside the stomach hence the pain/discomfort. Once it had settled down I turned it once a day but 11 years later it's about once a week if I remember Slight smile, I use hydrocortisone cream if it aches/gives pain as it seems to help. Plus I never went overboard in cleaning the site/stoma as it seemed to inflame the area, some people do go a bit OTT on this.

  • Thanks, Chris. I’ve been up all night with the pain: it hurts to lie down. I have radiation this morning at 8.50, so I’ll try and grab a dietician for advice.

  • Thanks, Ray, it’s reassuring to know the pain is normal. I was afraid I had pushed it in too much, or pulled it out too much; erk!

  • Hi Louisa

    Your experience sounds fairly normal.

My hubby had quite a bit of pain with the PEG for the first 2 weeks. He ended up on antibiotics as it got infected.

However he now finds it a doddle when turning it and using it. It’s become like an extra limb!!

He does what it taken out of course as he is 9 weeks post treatment. We will discuss this with his consultant next Thursday for his 2nd appt since treatment finished.

    Good luck with everything.

  • The only time mine hurt was if I set the stop to tight, try it slightly looser, perhaps

  • Turns out it was infected! Spent the day in A&E: scan, IVs, morphine. Come home with a shedload of antibiotics and a sick bucket.

  • I have just seen your update Allthecolours about being up all night which definitely not normal, it did not cross my mind about an infection but it makes sense now as mine was aching recently (not painful ) and it was an infection. The antibiotics should do the job, best wishes.
