We've created a new thread for radiotherapy discussions.

Please do let us know if you have any other threads you think would be useful to link here.

  • I get it now. So when there is a long pause (it seems really long anyway while you're lying there and waiting for the next bits to happen)  and they say they're looking at/checking the images, I didn't realise at the time that it was the flat panels going round that were producing them. Thank you for explaining so well - I was a bit overawed by the enormity of the machine and trying to lie very still, do the special breathing and get things right/get the best outcome. It's amazing treatment !

  • Did you take painkillers ? I am waiting to start my RT on 8th November . Had surgery a month ago but have had an infection in my left side so waiting for that to clear first .

  • Hi

you are welcome. Happy to have put your mind at rest. It really is amazing technology

It can be overwhelming if you don’t know what’s happening.

    onwards and upwards x

  • Wee Susie

There are hospitals though where they were not doing testing at all though. You were asked whether you had symptoms of Covid and we all sat there in masks socially distancing, often waiting for 3 hours to be seen. The hospital staff still were up close to you as they had to examine wounds, do mammograms. I'm describing the Breast Clinic where I went once a week on average. No tests no nothing.

  • Five days. 2 one week , weekend off then 3 days.

Thanks X-ray girl. It was my last session and they hadn’t done this before. The machine def moved to my left side, it was on the top. I was worried that it was zapping my ribs and heart. I should of asked then lol.

But yes def, the machine are super efficient and the staff know what they are doing. It was in central London, the Rad dept was one of the best dept, friendly and professional. So much so, another lady said she was sad to leave . I agreed, it was like being in a bubble.

I'm sure there is much variation from place to place in UK.

I can only share my Scotland experience.

Wishing you well with all your recovery ,

    Wee Susie x

  • Hi , just wondered where you were having your RT . I am provisionally booked at Guys . 5 times a week starting 8th November for 3 weeks .

Have to say my initial consultation with Professor Sawyer was a positive on e. She seems lovely . Currently I am having a few issues post surgery ( no lateral lumpectomy) with an infection hence a slight delay in starting RT .

Hlas your central London experience has been good . Makes me feel bette

  • Hi Sue .

Pleased to meet you albeit under strange circumstances .

I had bi lateral lumpectomy with sentinel node extraction ( came back clear ) on the 17th September . I am due to start RT on the 8th November . The reason for the slight delay is that I have struggled with infection where they removed lymph nodes on my left side .Apparently my surgeon  had to go quite deep . Aaaah!
I have just finished AB and the pain is subsiding albeit slowly .

Generally speaking I think it’s about 6 weeks after surgery when you begin your RT . But , as in my case , it can be longer .
I have 3 weeks planned of 5 daily visits . Again it would seem that this varies from case to case .

    I hope this helps .
    Lots of hugs

    Penelope

  • Hi Glitterbee

I’m glad you had a positive experience in the RT dept. They are usually very friendly places and I’ve had lots of patients say they would miss coming for treatment.

The machine is pre programmed with your plan and won’t switch on if machine head is at the wrong angle so I hope this reassures you

Just to say to anyone else having treatment if you have any questions for the radiographers please ask them. No question is too daft.

    wishing you all well
