Hi there,

I have spoken to my surgeon today regarding my diagnosis of stage 1 breast cancer. Will be going into hospital beginning of March for surgery and afterwards radiotherapy. Just wondering if anyone here has or is going through the same, and how they are coping. I cant believe that just four weeks ago life was "normal".

Hi I had my lumpectomy in Nov for stage 1 breast cancer just about to start radiotherapy in March.  Emotionally on a roller coaster but trying to take 1 day at a time.  Only way I can cope.

Hey I know what you mean the ups and downs keep on coming, a bit down right now, suddenly its getting real, can't grasp I'm talking about myself like this. Hang in there x

  • Read my profile.  6 years ago for me xx

  • Be kind to yourself. I’m in the same boat as Brown Owl 30. Breast conserving surgery in Jan and radiotherapy due to start in March. Just grateful for quick diagnosis and treatment. I got my result of DCIS intermediate grade on 10th Feb - cried/sobbed my heart out. Then out of nowhere the following Tuesday totally broke down sobbing uncontrollably and then slept for 3 hours solid. Better out than held in for me. But we’re all different. Bear in mind recovery from surgery isn’t the same as acknowledging and releasing the emotions that come with what you’re going through. You can be grateful and positive and an emotional wreck, all at the same time. And that’s perfectly fine. Take care and know you’re in good company here x

  • I completely relate to how you are feeling and all the comments too. I had lumpectomy in Jan, following a routine mammogram.  Am on letrozole and about to start radiotherapy next week. Like you, this was a bolt out of the blue, I couldn't feel anything myself, but from diagnosis to treatment has only been 3 months in total , so grateful for that. I am concerned about radiotherapy,  and am feeling achey, tired, flushes back and cant sleep at night due to letrozole?? Wishing you all a successful journey xx

  • Hi Bilko, replied to you just now elsewhere but not sure I tagged you correctly.  I started the short intensive radiotherapy yesterday (5 day one) and it really is absolutely fine.  I have had two of the five sessions and am just a bit red and swollen.  Boob feels a bit like it does when your period starts - swollen and a bit tender if you press on it.

For the majority of us it seems this is the extent of the side effects I'm told so should be the case for you too.  some people can feel a bit tired but I've been fine today just a tiny bit tired yesterday but that could be because i went to bed too late.

Hope it all goes well for you

I have been diagnosed 6 days ago grade 2 ductal carcinoma..now have to wait until 11th March for appointment with consultant to discuss the treatment. Have been told that its likely to be lumpectomy and radiotherapy. The waiting is awful.

  • I agree. The waiting is awful. I had initial biopsy early December but that came back unclear other than B3-B4 so had surgery on 14 Jan and had to wait another 4 weeks for my results. The not knowing was difficult. Made more difficult by family and friends asking questions that I didn’t have answers to. Equally being asked how I’m doing every other day... just exhausting. Do what you need to think and feel positive. Work for me was a welcome distraction in parts. Talking openly about it has helped. Gardening, long walks and fresh air I find help clearer thinking, perspective and it’s a focus on what I can do to help myself in the meantime. You’re not alone xx

    @Bilko 19

Hope you don't mind me tagging as it seems like we are going through the same treatment.

My lump was only picked up by mammogram. Had a lumpectomy/sensory node biopsy at the end of December, 2nd operation  in January to widen the margin and removal of lymph nodes. 30 over all but fortunately I only had cancer in 4. Saw the oncologist last Friday. I don't need chemotherapy just radiotherapy and hormone tablets. My score on the chart was only 13%.

Last Friday I started the Letrozole no side effects yet. Bone scan at christies hospital Manchester tomorrow. I'm waiting for an appointment with the consultant to discuss radiotherapy.

I got over both operations quite easy (apart from crying but didn't know what I was crying about)

I'm still thinking it's happening to someone else.

Good luck with your treatment and hope it goes well.

    Take care

Thank you for sharing and for your kind words. How are you feeling now? What further treatment are you having?
