I had a mastectomy and level 2 node clearance, chemo and radiotherapy followed. I had 12 weeks of physio to help with cording. I still have cording even though I am active and do stretches etc.
After about a year, I had problems lifting my arm outwards and upwards. I was referred to specialist and following a mri on my shoulder was diagnosed with some inflammation and arthritis in my shoulder. I had a cortisone injection in my shoulder and it was great.....no pain, increased movement etc. I was told that this might not last....I am now having pains down my arm and sometimes a ‘heavy feeling. I am going to recontact consultant. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced problems....and if so, what treatment and success rate. Any info much appreciated.
I had SMX and full node clearance last July followed by radiotherapy ending last October. I do my exercises but have cording problems and ‘tightness’ across my shoulder, round one side of my chest and half way round my back. I asked for a referral for physio in February- was told by the BCN over the phone that she Would ask the surgeon if I needed it and if he thought so she would get him to refer me - I’ve heard nothing so I assume he doesn’t think I need it ( but as he hasn’t seen me since January I’m not sure how he knows this!). I spoke to her again in July about the problem and was told it’s normal and would be sorted when they do my reconstruction- that’s okay but as I’m in pain with it some days and I’m not yet on the waiting list for the reconstruction I’m feeling quite miserable about it. I have spoken to the BCN 4 times since February but have made no progress - I just feel I am being left to slowly get worse when all the literature suggests that early action prevents permanent problems. I feel that at 51 I am too young to be left with a weakness like this.
I had to raise it a couple of times, my gp offered no comment so I thought maybe I should just count myself lucky that it wasn’t a big problem. But after several months I raised it with my oncologist and he referred me. I feel tightness when I stretch my arm up. I am not sure if the shoulder issue is related to my op. but it seems a reasonable thought. If I was you, I’d push a bit more! Physio definitely helped me....and I’m thinking of pushing for some more sessions.
