Feel a right wimp. I'm normally 'ard as nails' as us northerners say. Got my first ever general anesthetic today. It's only to remove 3 sentinel nodes but its all becoming much more realistic now.

Probably because I'm taking the next 2 days off work and had to have my nice acrylic nails removed last night is making it more realistic. Have to accept that my life is on hold because of this......

Don't know if anyone else is awake but it helps a bit just writing it down on a place where other ladies understand what I'm ranting on about

  • Hi Sam .  I’m sure today will go well .  I’ve had 3 general anaesthetics in my life and it’s amazing how one minute you are scared :anxious and the next you are waking up and it’s all over !  Theatre staff know you will be anxious and are great at dealing with you.  I remember my last op I was told to take my pillow with me to theatre !  I was hugging it like a teddy bear.  I was just about to lose it when confirming my identity etc. and it’s as if the theatre nurse sensed it and moved things along and distracted me and that’s last I remember.  Home same day and didn’t need painkillers as I was pain free.

Hi Sam , lying in bed and just reading your post brought all the old feelings back, us northerners are “ard as nails” Wink ....you’re allowed to feel scared chick , but in my experience the theatre staff were bloody wonderful, I remember posting a fb pic the night before my sentinel node biopsy of my top lip covered in hair removing cream so I looked “my best” for the anaesthetist RoflRoflRofl , humour was my way of trying to deal with it all ......    sending you so much positivity love and good luck for today !!! Please keep in touch if you can Two heartsTwo heartsTwo heartsBlushBlushBlush

    Hi Sam

It's funny how naked one feels without the acrylic nails. I've heard all sorts of reasons why they have to come off. Some are quite bizarre.

The best was given to me before I had surgery for a bunion. To quote" The issue is, if a nail comes off and gets into the wound more surgery may have to take place to remove it." I dread to think what they would be doing to me for this to occur!!!!!!

As the reason varies depending on who you speak to I've come to the conclusion that it's one of these historical things, like being shaved and having cod liver oil before you give birth.

I hope all goes well and you are fully acryliced as soon as possible.

    Thanks everyone,

made me smile when I read these this morning. Dying for a coffee. Just weighed myself and of course weight is 66.6kg......made me smile too.

I'll update you as soon as I'm alive again!!

    xxx

  • It's not as scarey as you think. The nurses are lovely and so are theatre staff x not just saying that because I'm a nurse. I've had 5 surgeries since August..so bloody exhausted..tough as us northerners xx

The nail thing is necessary though. However my hospital only needs one nail clear for the pulse oximeter.. ie the probe that reads your pulse and oxygen levels.  If there is acrylic with painted nails, can give false readings x and it can't read through purple or red nails especially xx that's mean taking them all off xx

Good luck x not that you need it xx
