Less than 2 months ago my lovely Dad was fine. Then he complained of a sore tummy. After seeing a doctor he was sent for a CT scan and they saw abnormal lymph nodes. He was sent for another CT scan for his chest and all clear. He had a biopsy which came back showing poorly differentiated carcinoma with unknown priory. Within a couple of weeks Dad had severe abdominal pain had lost his appetite and lost a lot of weight. After an Endoscopy and Colonoscopy they found a cancer in his colon at the corner between the ascending colon and traverse colon. They advised they would do surgery and booked him in for a couple of weeks time (he had to self isolate due to Covid). Dad went quickly downhill and had a really bad day with vomiting and diarrhoea. The next day he saw his consultant who admitted him to hospital immediately. That was yesterday. The consultant on duty called and advised us they are extremely perplexed as the tumor does not look like a normal tumor or what they would expect and its touch and go. All throughout the consultants keep using the word perplexed. My Dad has always been strong and fit and had regular bowel cancer tests..last one in August showed clear. Now I'm so scared my Dad is in hospital alone. They said they will operate on Tuesday if he makes it until then. He is too full of life and it's all happening so quickly. It's just heartbreaking. We can't see him and I just don't know how to cope with all this.

  • Hi

Welcome to the forum . That would be incredibly disturbing to me too and to be honest it is not something we hear too much about on the forum but covid is bringing its own issues . To be truthful if my dad was so ill I would be requesting family were allowed to visit him . It seems totally unsatisfactory that he is completely on his own . Even for end of life care for covid patients in our hospital the family are allowed in for a few days .
It is only my opinion but I would be phoning . For a more objective view you could contact our helpline 0808 808 0000 and see if they can advise anything .

It sounds as though you require some more information . Has his bowel perforated or is it is other organs that are struggling and they are hoping to stabilise them over the next few days to allow surgery to occur ? If you feel you don’t have enough information phone up again . It’s your dad and you all require to be fully informed .

It is incredibly hard for staff too just now and we understand that but it’s equally as difficult for patients and family and I am Sure as long as it’s done appropriately they will understand . My heart goes out to your family as this is incredibly tough when your not there and able to support him .

    Take care ,
