Hello, my grandma and I are looking for support and advice, she is 73 and had a colonoscopy a few weeks ago they found a 5cm tumour with biopsy taken, we don't know how to feel and what the next stages will be but she's really worried as she's had to go into hospital with a bowel obstruction due to the tumour, she's worried that she must be far on and I'd like to help her but I don't know how, it has come as a shock, any help would be really appreciated
Hi
Welcome to the forum . Sorry to hear about your grandma .
A bowel tumour can obstruct but still be operable and have a good outcome . The priority for the surgeons just now will be to resolve the obstruction but they will give her a CT scan and check her abdomen area to make sure it has not spread . Then they have a meeting called an MDT ( multi disciplinary meeting) and they decide collectively the next step . So if she needs chemotherapy they will refer her to an oncologist.
They will take really good care of her but it’s hard when family are not allowed on the ward . She is welcome to join us and we would be happy to support you both as she goes through this .
Take care ,

Thank you for the reply Court, she has had a ct scan and mdt meeting but doesn't know the outcome yet.
She can use computers and technology well which is why she asked me to help her.
She had a colonoscopy, ct scan and pet scan last year but they found nothing the. This year it was there. She thinks 5cm is really big and they won't treat her. She also has had strokes recently etc too she's 72.
She's worried and that's understanable and she's scared how they will unblock her, she's had so much laxitavie over the last few days,
I don't know but I'm guessing staging of the cancer is determined on how big it is, if it's spread? Would a bowel obstruction be end stage?
Thanks for your help

HI
Tell her not to worry too much. She's definitely in the right place at the moment, to be well looked after.
My Colon Tumour was also 5cm. It's not usually the size that is of too much concern, but whether it has spread. However, my surgeon at the time was concerned that mine could also cause a bowel obstruction.(They couldn't pass the tube through the area at my Colonoscopy.) & therefore, the operation was carried out within the following 4 weeks. (That was in May '18.)
I was 70 at the time, which is not a deterent to operate. Mine was keyhole surgery, which is considered very safe & effective. But all health factors will be taken into consideration at the MDT meetings, which she should hear the results of very soon.
I wish you both the very best.
Marianne
