Hi all

I'm new to this forum and don't really know where to start. I had a bowel resection last Tuesday and was wondering what happens next. The hospital where amazing but obviously no visitors allowed in this horrible time and all the information they gave me didn't sink in really, would have loved my hubby with me as another pair of ears as such. They said histology takes about 2 to 4 weeks ( tumour and nodes removed) so is that when I will have my next appointment. Thanks in advance xx

  • Hi , Welcome to the forum
You are so right . Another set of ears is really helpful . My mum and I often absorb different parts of the consultations and piece them together the next day.

So tough not having visitors and family support in hospital just now .

Sometimes they like to check the wound is healing and all is going well but for most of my mum’s surgeries it’s been two to three weeks and they have all the details about histology. They can give you a wee update on what they achieved in surgery but they have probably told you on the ward . Then they just back that up with the lab results .

Do you have a specialist nurse you could call ?

  • Hi thanks for the info. Yes I have a specialist nurse I am going to give her a call today I think to put my mind at rest and understand what the next steps are.

    Thanks for your help

  • Hi and a warm welcome to the board from me too. I felt a bit like a zombie in hospital due to the lack of sleep so I can totally appreciate how hard it is to take everything in.

Ringing your support Nurse is a good idea. It was actually the nurse who rang me with my results and she was able to tell me that the tumour had been removed with clear margins (ie. a clear area all around it) and I had 2/17 lymph nodes affected both of which were quite close to the tumour. This was good news as lymph nodes run in chains so it meant there weren’t any outside of the removed area. I still had follow up chemo but she was pleased to tell me that I was ‘now cancer free’.

Please keep posting and let us know how you’re gettung on

    Take care

  • Hello hope everyone is hope all is well Jilly, so happy for you  Karen.  Love Nelly 1955 xx

  • Hi Court wonder you can help me , my scans ar on the 8th and  10 th next month, my telephone review came through the post for the 30 th December, I know we are coming up to the Christmas holiday but is it normal to wait so long to see if the chemo radiation has taken so long, thank you

  • Hi and I hope will forgive me for jumping in here. Radiotherapy continues working for several weeks after finishing your treatment and that’s why there can be a gap before your scans. Some of my scans seemed to be read at the hospital and some were sent away to an outsourced company and they took ages to come back! My consultant was also on holiday when the schools were off eg. Easter and Xmas so that may be another reason why your meeting isn’t until the end of December!

I know it’s hard but try and keep busy and distract yourself - we’re nearly in December already and once Xmas is over you’ll have less than a week to wait,

    Take care
