Hi all. I haven’t posted for a while. I completed five weeks of chemo and radiotherapy in September. On Wednesday I had the follow up with the surgical team and although the tumour has shrunk a ct scan showed a new 11mm lesion on my liver. This is now the priority. I have a MRI on my liver and a full body PET scan next week. But looks like I need liver surgery ASAP with the aim being the radiotherapy and chemo continue to keep the bowel tumour in check for surgery later. I am devastated and struggling with sleep due to anxiety. I guess I am reaching out to anyone who has experienced similar. I am also not sure if there is another support group in terms of liver surgery. Thank you.
Hi my husband has just been diagnosed with bowel cancer with 3 small tumors in the liver as well. We just had the MRI and meet with the team next week so I can’t be of much help yet except empathy on your worry and confusion. I read somewhere else on this site that bowel cancer spreading to the liver is just that, not liver cancer, so perhaps this is the right place. As we learn things I’ll post them here. Also my husband’s GP has prescribed some anti-anxiety medication which is helping him to sleep better while we wait. Take care and sending a virtual hug...
Thanks for taking the time to reply Juppy. It must new such as anxious wait for you and your husband. Our partners go through so much too and they also need support. I have thought about anti-anxiety medication this time but I am going to try and give it a bit longer. This news has plunged me back to June when we had the initial bowel cancer diagnosis. But I did manage to regain my equilibrium after a couple of weeks and hoping I can find my feet again. You just want to take yourself out of your own head for a bit!
Hi and
Just want to reach out to you both ! Hearing that bowel cancer has spread to the liver is initially very frightening . You are more than welcome to post here as the treatment has a big overlap with other stages of bowel cancer .
Once the initial shock settles and you get to do a bit of reading you do see a subset of patients who continue to do very well despite a secondary spread . Both of what you have described sounds like you have treatment options . Surgery actually changes prognosis quite a bit .
Bowel cancer that has spread to the liver also has many options for treatment as well as surgery there is radio frequency ablation .
It is very disappointing news but it’s not without hope . My mum is 11 years into a stage 4 diagnosis and they have been good when not in active treatment .
If you click on my user name you can read her full story if your looking for some encouragement. Chemotherapy options are largely the same for different stages of cancer .
Best foot forward as my mum likes to say and I wish both families every success getting the right treatment plan to assist you over this bump and on to full health .
Take special care ,

Certainly my mum’s CT scans have always been quite reliable indicators so I am holding out for the same for you . Operating with curative intent is nice to hear .
All the very best with the results .
