My husband has recently been diagnosed with an 8 cm tumour. It is curable and he starts His chemotherapy on Wednesday but I’m struggling watching him wasting away. He is in a lot of pain that morphine is helping but he feels nauseous all the time and is not eating. The dr has prescribed 40 sips that he has twice a day. I’ve purchased everything he says he fancies but then he can’t bring himself to eat anything due to the nausea.
will he be ok?

  • Hi ,

Welcome to the forum . Really sorry to hear about your husband. He is having it rough . Can I ask was he as nauseated before he started on morphine? That can be a bit of a vicious circle . We experienced it with my mum .

My mum was asymptomatic prior to starting her treatment and lost three stones . I found it extremely distressing looking at her weight drop off . Trying to make every calorie count . However after treatment finished she regained most of her weight . Keeping her hydrated was essential. Can he sip fluids ok . We found a high calorie milk shake which we also blended a chocolate bar in to ( or Macdonald’s) the sort of thing you would normally avoid was so high in calories and she would just sip it slowly over an hour . It demanded less from her in terms of actually eating and could be done a little sip here and there . But we had ice cream and a chocolate bar hidden in there ! Along with her build up drinks . She tolerated complan

  • Sorry not sure what happened there !
She tolerated complan chicken soup ( Morrison’s medical section) and a piece of toast . Sometimes a high calorie dessert . But really not a lot and a totally departure from her normal . The build up drinks have enough nutrients in them to get by on so I was satisfied if she could do that and one ir two others. It is distressing to see!

The good news is he is heading for a cure and with time and care you will get him through this and back on his feet . It took my mum around a year to start gaining her weight again . You would never know now but when I look back in photos it brings it all back .

Has your GP or oncologist suggested a dietician get involved ? They keep a really good eye on their weight during chemo . Weighed before every cycle . Take to his oncologist too as they might try to get to him on better anti sickness drugs . Is he on any just now as you might like to chat that aspect through with his GP right away . Apparently there are a few different ones on the market .

Also we have a helpline here . 0808 808 0000, or phone his specialist nurse if he has one to get others opinions. That’s been our experience and that’s just from our viewpoint and may not be right for your husband .

What I did learn was not to sit on things and struggle on . Keep chatting through it with the medical people involved in his care .

Take  care and so glad you popped on to raise this . It takes a lot out of you watching someone you love going through all this so be good to yourself too.
